Which type of Atheist are YOU?

"Atheists are of three kinds.

  1. The mere stupid man. (Often he is very clever, as Bolingbroke, Bradlaugh and Foote were clever). He has found out one of the minor arcana ('one specific view of existance'-O), and hugs it and despises those who see more than himself, or who regard things from a different standpoint. Hence he is usually a bigot, intolerant even of tolerance.
  2. The despairing wretch, who, having sought God everywhere, and failed to find Him, thinks everyone else is as blind as he is, and that if he has failed—he, the seeker after truth!—it is because there is no goal. In his cry there is pain, as with the stupid kind of atheist there is smugness and self-satisfaction. Both are diseased Egos.
  3. The philosophical adept, who, knowing God, says “There is No God,” meaning, “God is Zero,” as qabalistically He is. He holds atheism as a philosophical speculation as good as any other, and perhaps less likely to mislead mankind and do other practical damage as any other. Him you may know by his equanimity, enthusiasm, and devotion. I again refer to Liber 418 for an explanation of this mystery. The nine religions are crowned by the ring of adepts whose password is “There is No God,” so inflected that even the Magister when received among them had not wisdom to interpret it.

For all you LHP-ers ;)

There is a fourth kind of atheist, not really an atheist at all. He is but a traveller in the Land of No God, and knows that it is but a stage on his journey—and a stage, moreover, not far from the goal. Daath is not on the Tree of Life; and in Daath there is no God as there is in the Sephiroth, for Daath cannot understand unity at all. If he thinks of it, it is only to hate it, as the one thing which he is most certainly not.

This atheist, not in-being but in-passing, is a very apt subject for initiation. He has done with the illusions of dogma. From a Knight of the Royal Mystery he has risen to understand with the members of the Sovereign Sanctuary that all is symbolic; all, if you will, the Jugglery of the Magician. He is tired of theories and systems of theology and all such toys; and being weary and anhungered and athirst seeks a seat at the Table of Adepts, and a portion of the Bread of Spiritual Experience, and a draught of the wine of Ecstasy."

Ah, a healthy reminder why my Crowley books are gathering dust. I am the type of atheist who realizes that there is no evidence for God and no need for God, therefore God likely does not exist. This is objectively, of course. It is quite obvious that God can exist within the human mind, but this is simply a part of magic and does more harm than good to the concept of God objectively existing.

making a label for a atheist is a lot like barking at those pesky anti gravitationist

hardly - there are clearly many forms of Atheist. I am an Athiest - but my Scientist colleagues and I are metaphysically, in many ways, poles apart.

no offense intended - you sit on the same table as Mr Dawkins who I greatly admire, but like all number 2s, is still missing the giant elephant in the room...

And what elephant in the room is that?

Diseased ego is kind of a harsh word coming from a person who, along with their occult teacher, blatantly reeks of egoism. Suppose I search the entirety of the earth and do not find one single unicorn. How then does denying unicorns exist make me egotistical? It also depends on how exactly you define God. You can dive into pseudo-kabbalah and drug induced, illogical religion supported by all sorts of babbling numerology all you want, and you may find peace, but you will not find God.

Who exactly is going to admit honestly to 1 or 2? When characterizing atheists, I think there must be better sources available than ******* Crowley!

None of the above really. I just don't think god is important in general, whether god does or doesn't exist, I think we should focus on other things: epistemology

Another option. The atheists that doesnt consider God to be logical, but doesnt care that much about what other people believe. Their only interest in religion is purely philosophical. Live and let live ftw!

Might be similar to 3, but they arent "adept".

And I would like to point out that all these options arent very good. There exist many atheists, many theists, and many people who are inbetween, Or simple in another place and looking in on the eternal struggle between the theist and atheist and wondering why they are fighting! Ok, dont take that line seriously, just trying to say there is far more nuances to humanity to be generalized into a few options like that.
