An educated populace is necessary for a functioning democracy.
The commons -- those things used by and beneficial to the whole of society, like police, firefighters, food and building inspection, &c -- are best publicly funded. Items of choice may be left to private, for-profit entrepreneurs.
I believe education should be treated as part of the commons.
It has been done successfully before and costs less than privatised schools. It would be a win-win for all but the 1%.
