Who is your hero?

I guess the 1st person or persons that come to mind are the New York City Fire Department. The ones who lost their lives on 9/11. Love the billboards about that. "While others rushed out, they rushed in... Courage. Pass it on."

I don't think I can actually come up with just one. Is it OK to give you four?

These would be:

St. James the Persian - his incredibly gruesome martyrdom is a wonderful example of what true faith in God means and puts my own small trials in perspective - he's also my patron saint.
St. John the New of Suceava - much as above plus his example led me to find out more about the Orthodox Church.
St. Daniel the Hermit - a gentler and more holy man is hard for me to imagine. He really lived his faith truly.
Prince Stephen the Great and Holy - he gave his entire life to the defence of his faith and people and proved that power needn't corrupt and that lay people, whatever their job and whatever the secular demands on them, can still live a life pleasing to God if they wish.

I realise that all my heroes are saints and I apologise if that isn't the sort of thing you were looking for, but I don't really have any secular heroes. Those figures most modern people seem to hold up as heroes or role models frankly usually leave me cold.

James

I don't honestly know - I guess, it it has to be someone from this period in time, perhaps Stephen Hawking. After all he has twelve honorary degrees, was awarded the CBE in 1982, and was made a Companion of Honour in 1989. He is the recipient of many awards, medals and prizes and is a Fellow of The Royal Society and a Member of the US National Academy of Sciences.

Hmmm... This is a toughy, I'd say the Dalai Lama ranks pretty high. Lao Tzu, St. Francis, Shakespeare, Siddhartha Guatama, Grand Master Chun Sik Kim, Master Joe Bruno, My father, My mother, My girlfriend, My cats, and my dogs.

my hero is a friend of mine, an author, father, artist, and activist. he's seriously the coolest, toughest person i'll ever meet. ever.

when i was younger, my heroes were Batman, Bob Dylan, and The Buddha. they still are, really. it's just that i don't know them, can't talk to them, can't write to them. they're still cool, though.

Got his face on T-shirts, smoked huge cigars, died young - stayed pretty, popular icon...he's...

...Cliché Guevara. :biglaugh:

Nah, I'm more of a Ghandi kinda guy.

Joey Ramone is also a bit of an inspiration to me, along with wee Joe Strummer (for you who are unfamiliar - he was in my band before we made it big. He left to play with some 'pub' band...Clash or something. His loss).

Angelina Jolie, closely followed by all those really cool guys like Siddhartha and Gandhi and the Dalai Lama.

I guess that my hero would have to be Antonio Vivaldi. He wrote some pretty sweet licks in his day. Of course Markus Grosskopf gets cool points too.
