Who knows about rocks? I have a rock question. Yes a rock lol

So 15 years ago I found this in my yard. It looks like a geode.
Its near coal black like its been burnt on the back side and well, crystals of some kind on the inside. Its the size of my fist or a little bigger.

How it came to be in my possession is rather odd. I had mowed the grass in my big ole yard for many years. 15 years ago I went out mowing and there its was. It had a little tore up dirt trail behind it, it was about 4-5 inches in the ground with dirt tuffed up to the sides and in front of it like it fell from the sky. Only this half. The other half couldn't be found.
I thought that's weird and wondered where it came from, maybe a meteor. Took it in the house and put it on a shelf where it has set for the last 15 years.

After 15 years of setting on my shelf my daughters talked me into sending some pictures and an email to a some geologists at a couple universities and I explained the the story about how I came into possession of it to see what they would say.

Well of course they replied and said great find, nice geode you have there. It can't be a meteor, meteors don't have crystals in them.
When asked why did it suddenly appear in my yard after not being there for many years, their reply was "it was always there and something must have dug it up".

Still a cool rock find no matter

I agree but the crystals look slightly different from others I have seen/looked at and that doesn't tell me how it got in my yard lol
It was already there. You probably whacked something just right with the mower to help unearth it just enough for you to notice it.
And it's definitely a geode, which is basically a rock with a dissolved cavity that gets crystalized over time. They come in many shapes, sizes and colors.

Yes I know what a geode is and yes I know they come in large sizes and different colors. A buddy of mine has a dining table that's made from one a little lighter in color than what you posted. Cost him around $13,000.

Now for your 'must have hit something hypothesis"..Nope. If I had hit something I would have known it and not to mention my yard is nice and smooth like a golf course.
Best I've got so far as somthing must have dug it up.

Cool geode! Judging by the blue shimmer, it looks like it might have some fire. Is there blue refraction when you turn it while light is shining on it? There's a lot of cool resources on rocks if you're curious how it formed, but I suspect if you went rock hounding in your area you might find more where that came from. Where you find one, there tends to be more

If I had to guess, it looks like it could be some kind of a low quality smoky quartz. Some smoky quartz can be very dark, or even black

Its actually mostly clear, just very little a little milky looking. the bluish/dark look you see is the black shell underneath showing through. Except where the light is reflecting off that one spot near center.

The fact that the outside of the geode appears to influence the crystals themselves is what leads me to believe that it might be smoky quartz. Here's what another similar low quality one looks like, when compared

But they can come in a variety of variations

Usually the darker the crystal, the higher the quality for a smoky quartz. All rocks tend to have a specific look depending on where you find them, so if you found more geodes in your area, it'd probably look similar to the one that you found

Its the only one I've ever found. I looked all over the yard after finding it, even dug where I found that one but didn't find the other half or any more.

Maybe someone messed up your yard and tried to cover their tracks with half of a thunder egg. **shrugs**

And the three fossils that I have ever found.
I also have tons of arrow heads, spear points, bird points, hide scrapers, axe heads, etc but keep them put away.

Here is one explanation how rocks "grow" out of the Earth:
How Rocks Appear In Your Garden

But it doesn't have to freeze. Bigger things (stones) will also "float" to the surface when the ground is slightly shaken. The smallest, to humans undetectable earthquakes will do. You can experience that for yourself: fill a bucket with sand and stones and give it a shake. The stones will rise to the surface (by the same principle described in the text).

And those are true. However it was summer and no earthquakes.(none detected or reported in the area)
