Who Wants to Work Tomorrow (Thanksgiving)?

Who wants to work tomorrow?

I don't. But guess who's working. Yeah, me.

Do I have to? Well, no. I have enough seniority to take the day off if I wish, but that just means that one of my subordinate managers has to miss Thanksgiving dinner with her family. So I bite the bullet since I really don't have much going on and work so she can get the day off.

So why do I (and my team) has to work? Greedy corporate America. Retailers have decided that Black Friday (the day of the year retailers go from being in the red to being in the black from an accounting standpoint) wasn't drawing enough business, so they started scaling back opening hours gradually from 4am Friday to as early as 7am on Thanksgiving.

But I don't blame the retailers. Well not exclusively. I put the bulk of the blame on consumers, who greedily gobble up (pun intended) the door-busters on Thanksgiving day without regard for others who are losing the day off to spend with their families.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's moral for consumers to shop while others are forced away from their family gatherings to serve them?

Would you have a problem with working on Thanksgiving?

Smile, not that we have your thanksgiving here ... however i often need to work Xmas and New Years ..
but then i work in an Intensive Care unit at the hospital ... New Year 2000 was quite fun around midnight,
with the world wide expectation of failure of life support equipment ... I was the first, checked, nothing failed, then i had to let Aussie know ....

I despise and utterly loathe making employees who fill non-essential positions (such as retail) work on a holiday, and I'm generally not shy about implying those that do should be ashamed of themselves. Myself, unless I should have to go to the ER or call 911, I refuse to support such debauchery and will make sure my car has enough gas so I don't even have to support a gas station's decision to be open on Thanksgiving and force someone away from their family. I can't claim to be close to my own family, but ffs let those who really make society tick and move enjoy the day with family like those whos idea of work is sitting in a board room, or really don't make any real significant contribution towards society.

The only day I've not had to work (or, more rather, bear the enormous burden of - I've worked the day, but it's not so bad if it's at a gas station) is Black Friday. It sucks working on holidays, but it does help when the crew of employees works together so everyone gets their planned family gathering time off and working to cover the hours of another's family gathering time. And, personally, I'm glad and thankful that as far as stable employment goes it's been some time since I've truly been proletariat and been asked "are you ok with being pried away from your family on holidays and settling eating reheated left overs alone?"

Sometimes it isn't about the door-busters. People leave town to visit their families for a day or two, and they need to do something with that time. Shopping is one of the great American pass-times. It's something people can do with each other on these family visits. Sometimes it is that.

Americans could do with some better pass-times.

We used to do Black Friday events for fun and to find gifts, but last year when they moved it to that impossibly early time we called it quits. They just ruined the whole thing by moving it earlier. It used to be fun.

I will be doing a couple of hours of work without pay tomorrow, scooping cat poop and feeding and tending to other animals whose only home currently is a cage at a shelter. They are one group of individuals who are almost all extremely happy to see me walk in the door.

I'm only working a half day tomorrow ;) I have a few samples to go through and then I'll be off.

I'm working as well. But hey it's 2 days holiday pay (Thursday and Friday). My job if I am on schedule I have to be there. Unless I can provide a death certificate or am hospitilized haha. I dont mind so much, the extra money can be used to make Christmas better so/shrug.
