Who Was Jesus?

For all reading this, my name is Sarah.

I've been assigned a project to interview at least three strangers on the question of "Who was Jesus?"

So my question to you is four-fold:

Was Jesus God?

Was Jesus perfect?

What was his purpose?

What responsibility (if any) do we have to him?

Thanks for your help and your insights on this topic.

It is meant to be a general survey. I just want to get a feel for who is here and what you believe. So those of all faiths are welcome to answer.

Thanks!!

1) No, absolutely not. He was a preacher, or teacher if you like

2) Who knows, there are only second hand accounts

3) To attack the Ruling religious authorities

4)None whatsoever

"Was Jesus God?" Jesus was not a god, I believe. He had some nice ideas and it's awful that he died as he did, but I don't believe he was a god.

"Was Jesus perfect?" Unlikely. We've all made mistakes at one point in our life.

"What was his purpose?" Same purpose the rest of us have, I suppose. To get through life in the most honorable way we can.

"What responsibility (if any) do we have to him?" The same responsibility we have to all great men... to remember them and their teachings.

Was Jesus God?
As much as any of us are. Although I'm no longer Christian, I still like to chat with him, and he was/ is simply a really nice guy who cared about people.

Was Jesus perfect?
If he was, it would make him rather inaccessable as a diety.

What was his purpose?
To show the power of kindness and love.

What responsibility (if any) do we have to him?
Only that responsibility that we have to ourselves, or to other gods. To strive to help others, to make ourselves the best that we can, and to try to leave this planet a little better than when we arrived.

Hello Sarah,

Welcome to the forum.

Was Jesus God?
I think it would be more apt, as a Christian, to answer the question as "Who is Jesus ?"
He was born into this world as God incarnate, in other words, he was born as a human being, in order to teach all of us how to live, by example.
Was Jesus perfect?
He was born as a human, and therefore was not perfect; he had to go through various Temptations, as we all do, to show, by example how to live.
What was his purpose?
As above, he was here as a prophet, to show us by example how we should live. He was here to teach us what is expected of us.
What responsibility (if any) do we have to him?
I have a responsability (That I have chosen to take on board) to worship him, as the son of God, to Love him, and to accept that he died on the cross so that we may be forgiven our sins. That is conditional (in Christianity) on being Baptised, by repenting sins we have comitted (all of us sin, often, that is humanity), and by doing so, we will be allowed into heaven when we die.

I hope that helps,

Michel;)

No.

Was Jesus perfect?
Yes

What was his purpose?
REstore the preisthood and the gospel; atone for the sins of mankind; break the bonds of death.

What responsibility (if any) do we have to him?
Follow his teachings and commandments

Was Jesus God? Not one of mine

Was Jesus perfect? Did he even exist for sure? If he did then I would think NO for he was supposedly human and no human is perfect.

What was his purpose? to love perhaps

What responsibility (if any) do we have to him? as much as any peace touting hippie...none at all. We might agree with the ideals and CHOOSE to follow the example... but no one is required to follow him.

Yes, the second Hypostasis of the Trinity Incarnate as man.
Was Jesus perfect?
Yes, both perfect God and perfect man.
What was his purpose?
To restore, via His Incarnation, the relationship between God and man that was destroyed by the fall and, in so doing, destroy the hold of death over man.
What responsibility (if any) do we have to him?
As an Orthodox Christian, I have the responsibility to strive to be like Him, follow His teachings and example and persevere to the end.

Welcome Sarah!

"Who was Jesus?"
A servant and Prophet of God

Was Jesus God?
No. God is one who has no son nor an associate. God is unique, there is none like Him.

Was Jesus perfect?
Yes, for all the Messengers of God are perfect since they received revelations and obey all God's commands.

What responsibility (if any) do we have to him?
To respect him and love him and believe that he was a true great prophet of God who sent him to teach the same basic message which was taught by prophets before him.

Peace

1.Yes,I believe he was seeing how he could do all of those miracles and then be crucified and be raised from the dead.
2.Yes,I believe he was perfect because the bible says so and I believe the bible.I realize not many will share this belief.
3.To come down from heaven and die on the cross so that we could all go to heaven if we accept him.He had to come because we are not able to make it to heaven without him.
4.If he came and died for us than we have an obligation to live our lives for him.Not part of our lives, not a third of our lives, but ALL of our life.

Yes He was human....but He was also God. In order for Jesus to be the "perfect" sacrifice and not under the same penalty of death as humans, He had to be perfect. He did go through various temptations, but He never gave in to them.

You already have more responses than you need but I will take a crack at it.

My first response when I saw the title of your thread was what Jesus himself said, "Who do you say that I am?"

Jesus was not born a god (no more so than any other human is god anyway) but he became one upon his "ressurection." He became the Christ, the living Word of God. I must say here that I personally do not believe in the literal bodily ressurection.

Pefect what? Was he without flaw in any way? Doubtful. But he was "perfect" in that he was entirely in tune with God's will on earth and followed it without regard to himself. He was about as perfect as a human can get with respect to one's relationship with God.

fiyamonkey said:
What was his purpose?
To restore the spirit of the Law, the Law being God's will on earth.

fiyamonkey said:

None. Our responsibility is to our own consciences, which I believe to be God in us. Jesus Christ provides a perfect model, a vehicle with which to carry out our responsibilites to God. But there are others that are just as valid.
