Why are "some" old people impossible to debate with?

Dunno about the "old" issue, but even the young ones have those that show rudeness and closed mindedness in debates and discussions, and I mean in all things of life, not just religious. I don't think the problem is in acceptance, but in the manner the debate takes place and in respecting freedom of opinion.

Gotta say that I haven't really observed this, although I do see a large difference between religious folk, especially the fundies, and secular people. Those steeped in religious dogma seem to easily carry this inflexible mind set into other aspects of life, which often shows up as intolerance.Why are "some" old people impossible to debate with?
I will say it is very true based on my observations when debating old people.
It really does go beyond reason and rational conversations. The intellect used is completely absurd. Comprehensive skills are out the window.
It is not just this forum, Im involved in many forums and hobbies, and this is ridiculous behaviour in every forum.
Please share your frustration.

Heck, not just elderly people, but some young people are impossible to debate. There is a crop of people who know absolutely everything and they know that no one else knows anything.
But people who have lived a long time have had far more experiences in life than those who have lived less time. They see the world differently. For instance, I see the world differently now than I did when I was 25: I got married at 25, had my first child at 26 and life changed for me drastically. I try to remain open-minded myself, I try to remember that younger people do know a lot and have had life experiences, as well. But, some of the older people don't keep in mind. Let's just say that when I was in the hospital a few days ago, the Navy doctor who treated me was at least 10-15 years younger than I am (I am 48). He seemed so young yet he knew more about health than I'll ever know. Some older folks are unable to do that. They see men and women 30 and under as "kids".

What is frustrating is when you explain 1 + 1 = 2 and they say it is 4

What frosts my socks is when you are explaining some intricate thing and get, "Well, that is your opinion!" Calmly, I say that it is not my opinion but based on verifiable facts they could look up if they were so inclined. I find they aren't especially keen on that approach....

But it does in both cases, the old seem to cling to their beliefs, while the young seem to believe they are right no matter what, both are from the ego.

Having a 70 year old lying mother I can say it is impossible. This is a woman who thinks she knows everything and lies profoundly if caught wrong and will do so even if it harms others.
Perhaps it is just my step mother but who knows.
Took years to convince her that the earth revolves around the sun. That the ocean has a bottom floor and that homosexuality is not a choice.
I know plenty of well mannered and moral old people but I have just never debated with them ever. I am very sure that old age must lead to some extent of stubbornness.

Not at all. At 60 it was quite satisfying to realize that everything I thought at 30 was still valid and on point: I got it all right the first time. This, of course, made the intervening years pretty much error free. I recommend it to all: don't waste your time thinking stupid stuff early on and wind up making all kinds of goofy decisions on the way to :hapbirth:Sexagenarian
