Why did God do it?

I can only come at this from an omni creator god perspective so why did God do it? If the universe is 13 billion years old (or even just appears to be!) and 150 billion light years across (don't care how accurate the figures are) and is as active and complex as observation would indicate our planet is but a dot amongst it all...why? This was all created for the sole purpose of the existence of humankind? I just don't get it. Why bother...what difference would it make if nothing happened?

what makes you think it was created for the sole benefit of mankind?
what difference would there be? can you expound your statement?

Yeah, what makes you think it would be for just humankind? There could be billions upon billions of sentient beings who God loves more than us. Or maybe he loves us all equally. Or maybe not at all.

Otherwise, why what? Why would God create everything?

Why not?

If you were a Cosmic Artist, then would you not paint?

Is that not the basics of a Christian world view. What makes me think this, well Genisis, "Here is the purpose of God's creation .....man. Obedient man. It was only man who was "created in the image of God" (Gen. 1:27).

what difference would there be? can you expound your statement?
Well if God hadn't bothered would we be any the wiser?

Why not is hardly an answer to an entire cosmos for a species, is it. And if he is a cosmic artist that would suggest a reason or a wish to not a "why not", surely.

just because we were made in his image doesnt mean the entire universe was made for us! we were made with his image, yes and that bestows an importance on us, but it is incredible presumpous to say that the world/universe was made for us.

and no its not the basics, perhaps its thought of in some christian circles but most certainly not ones ive heard of. we were made as stewards of the earth, we are mean to look after it not destroy it, and as steward it kinda implies it wasnt made for us.

True, but should religion have a place if it can't deliver a message without an obvious need to interpret since the god it speaks for is incomprehensible?
I read somewhere that religion is like a cultural attic, not so much designed as they are outgrowths of culture.
Should they have a place? I think so. We are a species that loves a good story, I think stories are good for us.
Regarding interpretation - we interpret and contest most everything. This thread is a perfect example.

Like it or not, so scripture says!:

“O SON OF MAN!
“Veiled in My immemorial being and in the ancient eternity of My essence, I knew My love for thee; therefore I created thee, have engraved on thee Mine image, and revealed to thee My beauty. “
--The Hidden Words, Part One, #4

and:

”O SON OF BOUNTY!
“Out of the wastes of nothingness, with the clay of My command I made thee to appear, and have ordained for thy training every atom in existence and the essence of all created things. Thus, ere thou didst issue from thy mother’s womb, I destined for thee two founts of gleaming milk, eyes to watch over thee, and hearts to love thee. Out of My loving-kindness, ’neath the shade of My mercy I nurtured thee and guarded thee by the essence of My grace and favor. And My purpose in all this was that thou mightest attain My everlasting dominion and become worthy of My invisible bestowals….”

I never said it was. In fact, you're asking me to defend something I opposed, so forgive me if I don't.

Ask an artist why they paint, usually it's it's not some compulsion, not for money (for many), nor for glory, it's because they enjoy it.

Getting back to why God would create the universe though, what's wrong with "why not"? Why does there have to be a reason for it?

His ONLY son sacrificed for us? Anyway, while you may be downgrading our importance you are still not giving me a reason for either us or the universe.

Correct. That is why I require a "why".

Because without a reason there would be no purpose to our existence (unless God is making it up as he goes along). Which is all fine by me but I'm not sure about those in the world who are or have suffered for one reason or another. All for no reason? If there is no reason, then fine, but I would still expect those who believe the universe was created by a god to be able to furnish one.

You might be right about religion but should its place be quite so prominent, thus able to control? If it is built on faith then its boundaries should reflect this.

Ok, it was love then. However, if he had not created the universe we would not have missed any of the love so, again, why?

The same could be said of the microscopic and atomic world. we are in a most interesting point of the scale of the universe. We can only look so far out and so far in. We can not ( at least not now) access the very smallest nor the very edge of existence.

True but if we cannot see it and cannot explain it then why attribute it to a god?
