Weird, I thought it was about Americans trying to impose their imperalistic culture on the poor and noble Mooninites.
Noble? They're a bunch'o rude'n crude practical jokers.
So we sent the Aqua Teen Hungerforce (in disguise) up there to put those little ****** ******s in their place.

I recall the moon landing effort as (no particular order).....
1) Compete with the Russkies
2) National pride
4) Technology benefits
3) Flat out ****ing cool!

Who knew that something so difficult then would work so well,
or that it wouldn't be met by foreign competition for so long?

This thread reminds me of a dinner I had in San Diego. A group of Aquanauts was consulting with the Navy on advanced underwater life support systems, included in this group were Astronaut Alan Shepard, Astronaut/Aquanaut Scott Carpenter, me, and a half dozen other underwater types. We'd gone out to dinner, Fidel's if I remember right. We had a few pitchers of Margaritas and most of the conversation was all of us (the Aquanauts) ganging up on Shepard and Carpenter (the Astronauts) about how much money was used up in manned space flight and how little was allocated for manned underwater stuff. Shepard leaned back, looked slowly around the table and drawled, "I know what the real problem here is. I got the last seat on the last moon shot and none of you did." Sounds like our friend from Sicily is unhappy that he didn't get to go, I know that I sure as hell am.

In your opinion, what induced the Americans to spend millions of dollars on something so useless, unfruitful and above all dangerous?

I have to assume that the Government had money to waste in the sixties
I believe moon rocks are the most valuable item per ounce on the planet, tho not nearly enough to pay for the trip

The way you ask the question is a sort of circular reasoning or circular logic. The answer must point back to the question, otherwise it’s impossible to answer. Unless the answerer agrees with Americans “spend millions of dollars on something so useless, unfruitful and above all dangerous” it cannot be answered. If I were to ask you, “Do Italians like to eat nails or screws?” How would you answer that? You cannot answer, “Neither”. That option is not available. Your only two choices are “nails or screws”.

Investing in Space Technology is not useless, We cannot stay on Earth forever, sooner or later Earth is going to be destroyed(either by the expanding sun or something else) and if Mankind is to survive, it has to expand outside Earth.
Competition between USSR was a major factor but being competitive is certainly not just a masculine quality and being competitive is certainly a positive thing IMO

The satellites have been very useful for satellite phone systems, computers, TV, etc. And let's not forget GPS (global positioning system). All as a result from the wasted space program (they let the astronauts drink bank then, that's why they were wasted)
