Why do so many religious people care what others believe?

Seriously, why? I honestly don't care what anyone believes, as long as their beliefs don't a) infringe on others' lives and b) don't hurt anyone.

This obsession so many people have to tell others ''you're wrong,'' or ''you're going to hell because you don't believe in...'' it's just mind numbing.

I don't know, but this sounds like a debate topic. I notice Arabic under your avatar, what does it mean? I'm glad you found your faith.

They are trying to save your soul. Save you from destruction or whatever happens to non-believers.

It's like trying to save a drowning man who keeps fighting you but you keep trying to save them anyway.

They are 100% certain you will suffer terribly if they stop trying. Salvation comes through hearing and hearing the Word of the Lord, so they are determined that you hear it every chance they get.

Such nice folks, trying to save you.

You're right. But the truth is, Christ isn't the only one who thought some of his beliefs. There are teachers before and after him who have taught similar things. The difference being, Jesus is the Savior of the world, to a believer. Which is powerful.

Sure people can teach it themselves but they could not teach it with the authority that Jesus taught it.

Whatever you believe, the fact that others may believe differently is a threat. And that threat is ... you might be wrong.

When everybody you know, everybody you've ever heard of, believes the same thing as you do, well, even though it might do you no good at all, at least it's comfortable and unthreatening.

But if what you believe (or think you believe) is earth-shatteringly important to you, and lots of people (possibly even the majority of them) think you're nuts, that's gotta give you the shakes!

I totally agree, but people are also taking advantage of this gay and lesbian struggle. Bruce jenner for example, this is a man who became a woman, and for some reason still likes women lol. Everyone in america has the right to be whatever he or she desires, but im tired of liberal non-sense infringing on me. I usually am on the left, but alot of times, I agree with the right. I like a moral society.
And you have every right to believe that. But, just curious...how does the LGBT infringe on you?

The truth about morality, is that I'm starting to wonder if it's static. Like does it always stay the same? Should it always stay the same? Social changes like making it permissible for gay people to legally marry...I mean, this is progress. I don't see positive progress as immoral. Now if it became legal for parents to marry their underage kids, I'd find that immoral because kids aren't consenting, you know? Between consenting adults...why should that offend the heterosexual community? I'm not arguing with you, just curious because you've been very honest and I like that, even if we may not agree.

So you didn't know Mequa? He was on here when you were, I know he probably would have found you because he loved all things Epicurean. :)
I love Epicurean Physics... I found that my published work shares those principles. Can't talk about it though... and if I could I couldn't talk about it here.

He also told people to leave their families and their jobs to follow him.

Not a paragon of good advice, if you ask me.
Early Mormon missionaries took "not two coats" on a mission. They basically took nothing. (This was in the middle 1800s). Nowadays a male will typically pay $10,000 for a two year mission... they all pay the average cost.

It means ''follow your heart'' :)

I actually just consider myself spiritual, with leanings towards the abrahamic faiths. I believe in Jesus' teachings, but really don't label myself anything anymore, specifically. The reason for the arabic is...I found out from my dad recently, that he is half middle eastern. His father was adopted (which I knew) in Italy, but his bio parents were Iranian and Syrian, which makes my dad half middle eastern. Which makes me I guess roughly 1/3. My dad kept this from me until a few weeks ago.

So, I'm channeling my middle eastern heritage these days. :D

I wonder about that, sometimes. Why would Jesus ask people to abandon their families? But, maybe he meant it metaphorically, in terms of...if you love Jesus, then you'll put him first?

Why then have hope if you cannot know?

You must be joking. If you know there is no God, what source is there for hope?

Why not just admit you don't know and move on?

That's exactly what agnostics, such as myself, do.

We also tend to ask "how can we improve things?" Hope is nothing more than a dream. A "security blanket," of sorts.

In the absence of any kind of relevant knowledge, yeah.

And hope for a good afterlife has often directly stagnated and balked progress towards giving relief to the suffering masses in this life.

"Hope" for a revealed heaven and hell, yeah.

That's so cool! It's always great to know more about your history. It really does piece spirituality together in a profound way. Most of my family are christian. My uncle has been trying to save me for years.

If you want to tell people about your faith, awesome. But, please stop telling people how to read the same text you're reading...as if they don't know how to read it.
Amen!

You're not going to get a gold star from whoever it is you think is handing them out in the after life, because you drove everyone around you mad with trying to force your ideas onto others.
Amen again.

End of my rant. Sorry, I had to say this.
Holy cow! Why apologize? This is one of the best posts I've read in a very long time.

I think you forgot someones, the great number of atheists going after the religious. Even here, many who do not believe in God keep on asking religious questions - many for the sake of putting down any answer that has anything to do with God.

Personally, you can believe anything you want. If I should happen to believe that others go to hell or heaven, which I don't, how does this hurt you if you don't believe this, why should it bother you. It is simply that person's beliefs. Some people believe that we originated from mineral rock soup, let them; though to me it makes no sense. Some believe the earth flat, let them. Other atheists, I have heard say that the earth has four corners and claim that believers believe this. Personally, I don't think the earth flat or a square, or rectangle - let them make outrageous claims. It only demonstrates their level of intelligence.

As long as people don't point a gun at me, here on the Internet, you can just choose not to respond.
