One reason is that many people mistake theism for a prerequisite of faith or of religion. So atheists end up presuming that there is nothing in there for them./from another thread

To be fair, "atheist" does not necessarily imply "reasonable."Faith is believing without reason. Faith cannot possibly be a path to truth, since any idea or its polar opposite are equally (in)defensible if all one needs to believe such an idea is faith in it.
