Why 'Gay'

I'm just curious here, but I have never understood why homosexuals are called ' gays', I mean, does this mean that hetrosexuals are dull by comparison. Please, somebody enlighten me. The word 'Gay' seems to have lost its original meaning in the English Language.

No idea, perhaps because they are happy when they sleep with people of the same sex and that makes them "gay"?

Ok, thanks, it's a little cloudy;however I get the idea that it was first used as a sort of code word, something akin to a masonic handshake. I still don't understand how it entered popular venacular globally though.

I was made aware of this when I took my family to to Florida some years back.

I was warned about not using the word '****' for cigarettes, as we do in England............

I always wondered what had happened to that song........I really find it hard to believe the word was removed.
