Why is the Bible considered gospel?

With all the books that have ever been written, why is the Bible considered the gospel? If a group of people wrote a book about Jesús the carpenter from Jersey (opposed to Jesus the carpenter from Nazareth) it would immediately be classified as fiction, no questions asked.

And if Jesús from Jersey was adament that it was true and claimed to walk on water, turn water into wine and claim his mother was impregnated by an invisible being without ever having sex... they would lock him up and throw away the key.

So why is it the Bible is considered gospel?

Found this humorous... but I'll assume you don't mean gospel as in good news...

Only if it was...

If they were intending to write an actual biography, and not a work of fiction, whether I believe the content is factual or not does not change the genre of the writing.

And if Jesús from Jersey was adament that it was true and claimed to walk on water, turn water into wine and claim his mother was impregnated by an invisible being without ever having sex... they would lock him up and throw away the key.
No, they wouldn't. You don't get locked up for being assumed delusional... Those people out there that adamantly believe lizardmen aliens rule the world aren't ;)

Because the books of the New Testament were written by an already existent and living Christian community, they didn't precede Christianity but are a product of Christianity.

Belief preceded writing in the Biblical case. Belief follows reading in the Jersey case.
Plus, "can anything good come out of Jersey?":D

Huh, I was thinking of the tiny island of Jersey in the English Channel, but I guess he did mean the place in America.

If the dude from Jersey had eyewitnesses that claimed that Jesus was killed and rose from the dead and died reporting this then you may want to pay attention. People die everyday believing something to be true, but people will not die for something they know is not.

While a good point, I saw David Copperfield make an elephant disappear... still didn't happen.
