Why is there such a division in the US?

The division seems to be accompanied by a hypocrisy and it seems centered around sexuality. However... Is there more to this division?

Did you see this story?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/05/constance-mcmillen-fake-p_n_525856.html

Now more disturbing then sending the lesbian to a fake prom... they sent others too? (Read the story, its short I promise)

Why?

Is this sexual repression? Is this an attempt to enforce tired, immoral standards of sexuality the few hold onto the many? And this at the same time as BondageGate. Do you remember the Wide Stance?

Even though I am raising this topic I am sure you are all aware of the Pope and the Vatican cover-up bs that is going on regarding pedophile priests. Is that also a by-product of sexual repression?

Why is there such a divide? Is it sexual repression? Many are calling Utah the most religious state. (I always spout what about Texas, hehe) But Is Utah the Porn capital of the US?

So... Does religion and devout religion cause sexual repression that manifests itself in a problematic fashion for the rest of society? If you think not... What is behind all of this?

Secondly, Why such hypocrisy? Why are those going to bondage clubs and looking down their noses judging those openly sexual while indulging hidden fantasies in private so judgmental? Jealousy?

I feel since I first began visiting RF that many freely discuss their Religious differences... which is a view I did not hold when I first came here. Its like Religious discussion is not taboo here. (Which is interesting even if many still have me on their ignore lists.) But is sexuality still taboo? And please... we have to play by the rules in discussion. If something you need to say is gonna strike a never, take it to the EROS room.

There's your answer.

Sexuality is a taboo because it scares people who don't know their own sexuality.

So how do you fathom religion plays into it? Do many religions encourage sexual repression? Is that damaging or harmful?

It is hypocrisy, even if I say so myself. I know of many divorced and remarried Christians, and Jesus specifically said that "what God has joined let no man separate". I have seen men and women look lustfully at others when Jesus said that was committing adultery in your heart.
The fact remains- Jesus never said anything about homosexuality, if you go by the gospels.

Even in the Old Testament, in the books of Moses law, there is a long, long list of who you can and can't have sexual relations with. Most people ignore that.

I go by Jesus commands which include "Judge not or you will be judged" he went on to say that we would all be judged by the same standards we set on others. He also said that if we show mercy, God will show mercy and so on.

Quite simply, sex is a theopolitical control device, especially among such traditionally patriarchal religions such as the Abrahamics.

Consider the sexual drive in men, and the oppression of gays almost to the exclusion of lesbians, the above story an exception, especially in the bible.

Sex is seen as a way, quite literally, to grab the flock by the shorts.

The perceptions of the world before reason and science most have appeared unbearable chaotic - religion provided the answers in terms of morality and justice (even though it was not correct) and allowed humans to persist in survival. Many religions do encourage sexual repression, in different ways I might add. IMO, it is harmful - it was a lot easier for me to rid the desire of expressing my sexuality once my sexuality was expressed and thus, defined.

This whole story shocks me. I look at most school systems and think of them as places to indoctrinate my children to the Liberal side of things.

I can't believe this backwards school is giving this poor little girl such a hard time. The prom is about the kids, all the kids. Someone is the school system needs to get over themselves and let the students have some fun. I can't believe this is such a big deal, two girls dancing together....Oh the horror!

Jealousy, sexual repression, these are all perceptual views. A quick answer for people who believe they already know the answer.

Possibly, some in society may be jealous, even envious. Possible some may even be sexually represted.

Personally I do not know of any religion which supresses sexual relations, Krishna would would have whacked his forehead with the palm of his hand, at the mere thought of it, whoa, get that thought out of there. Some modern day reigions do put standards on sexual relations, namely, get married first, make a commitment to each other. Many of course, in any society, believe that this is a false standard and seek love and pleasure wherever they find it, the key ingredient of course is Love. Love is what makes it respectful, a lack of Love is what makes it lust, or disrespectful. If you cannot be with the one you love, honey, love the one that you are with.

One of the big problems with the world today, which some modern day religions do not take into consideration. Men outnumber women in most age brackets, there is just not enough women to go around. Everybody needs to feel loved at sometime.

At my older son's wedding they did the tradiitonal thing of letting people pay a dollar to dance with the bride or groom. It ended up with some of the men dancing with men and some of the women dancing with women, and everyone had a blast.

LOL in Australia, in many cases, if the girls didn't get up and dance together, they most probably would have a dance at all. Apart from that, some see it as a good opportunity to stut their wares, as all the blokes take a sneak preview over their beers, and pretend that they do not care.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it was when I was young once upon a time. I don't understand what the big deal is anyway. It's just a dance after all.

So the high school seniors who wore dresses too revealing could choose between suspension and paddling. (And all but 1 chose paddling)

Really? A dress that is too revealing results in a teenage girl being punished... by....

paddling? Really? (In case you did not see this)

Can't be helped, Rick. Everyone is on the "liberal side of things" compared to you. Even the rest of the conservatives. :D

I have a question about the article. Did the school trick the girl into where the prom was being held or did the student body do it? The Article didn't seem clear about that and I'm curious.

Well the story has made the rounds so there is a lot of articles regarding it. I picked one that I happen to google first when I was posting this. But here is another source:

http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20100409/NEWS/4090333/1001/news said:
She and the American Civil Liberties Union challenged her school district's rule that banned same-sex prom dates and a stipulation that only male students be allowed to wear tuxedos to the event. In response, the school district canceled its April 2 prom and later announced parents would sponsor another dance in its place.

The ACLU believes the parent-sponsored dance that McMillen attended on Friday was a ruse because only seven students showed up. McMillen says the rest of her peers partied at another location.
