Why Taiwan Should Be Terrified of 'Emperor' Xi

OPINION: Why Taiwan Should Be Terrified of 'Emperor' Xi - The News Lens International Edition

With the announcement of the proposed changes to the Chinese constitution, the world has been rightfully alarmed by the section eliminating term limits on the president, which effectively opens up the possibility of Xi Jinping becoming a leader for life.

He has also proposed enshrining “Xi Jinping Thought” in the constitution, raising his stature equal to that of Mao Zedong, the last truly absolute ruler of China. Xi has been consolidating power for some time across the board using a wide range of tactics, but these constitutional changes appear to signal that Xi’s endgame is coming nearer: ultimate power.

Could not agree with this article more. Xi is an evil dictator whose ideology includes racial supremacy, hatred of the West, hatred of freedom, and hatred of all things decent like honor, honesty, kindness, and truth. He is a threat not just to Taiwan but to the whole world.

I am saddened that this is happening in China, but we need to be honest in reflecting on ourselves in the West also. In the West- representative government is being weakened by a new brand of authoritarianism that hijacks democracy and wears it's guise, while right-wing populists pass laws that undermine rights and freedoms. This is happening in Russia, and to a degree even in the UK and US.

A new wave of strong nationalism and demonizing 'other' is the driving force. Much like your grouping us into an other against the 'bad Chinese'.

And UKplc is allowing them to build and own our latest nuclear infrastructure, as well as putting huge amounts of cash into other projects. Still, better them than the EU, so the thought goes.

Sadly you are right. I hope the trend reverses very soon.

Not wishing to be overly simplistic, but essentially, China isn't a danger to Taiwan because the Taiwanese are armed to the teeth. In a little more detail, when the nationalists first withdrew to Taiwan, the the communists were struggling trying to hold the rest of China together and recovering from both civil war and Japanese aggression. By the time the PRC was stable enough to look at outward expansion, the Taiwanese were already heavily entrenched. Taiwan has two major strategic advantages. 1. the PRC want it "intact", as it were, thus severely limiting any form of nuclear option, which leads to 2. Taiwan is an island, and seabourne invasions are a really difficult exercise. Until quite recently, mainland China simply hasn't had the industrial base necessary to build the requisite force projection needed. Opposed landing operations require all sorts of equipment the Chinese simply haven't got. Its comparatively easy to arm and basically equip a many million man army. Its quite another proposition to deploy that force into hostile territory and logistically support them for an extended period. Its difficult exactly to say what world opinion would be if an actual invasion took place, China tends to be the elephant in the room that gets away with all sorts of stuff that would meet with instant condemnation and even military intervention if any other country tried it, but I think its safe to say that the probable negative effects on the global economy and Chinese reputation probably plays a part in dissuading Chinese adventurism, too

I hope it does too, but it'll take some resistance on the people's part. Because this new authoritarianism is much more subtle and insidious than fascism. It tries to hijack and use democracy, while maintaining an outward show of it. It looks and acts like democracy on the surface.

Modern authoritarians like the GOP are accomplishing something Hitler never could, and believe me- he tried. He went up against Hindenburg in an election, but lost. He knew the German people would never give him the power he wanted if Germany remained a republic, so he gained enough of a foothold within and destroyed it.

Modern authoritarians are using democracy as a tool, while maintaining it's appearance. Hitler couldn't manage to do that.

What? Me worry?

So you don't think China could or will lob a couple of hundred missiles (hopefully conventional) into the island before an invasion takes palce?

China's leadership doesn't act in such a rash way. They conquer more methodically & cost effectively.
Just look at Tibet & the S China Sea....they take where opportunity provides no serious resistance.
As a single party state with no elections, they take a longer view than our 4-years-is-an-eternity politicians.
They can afford to wait for circumstances to offer up Taiwan as low hanging fruit.
So Taiwan should be deeply concerned rather than terrified.

So you're saying the Chinese are...uhh...inscrutable?

(z)hina has over 30,000 missles aimed at all parts of Taiwan. They've openly stated that if Taiwan declares independence, they're willing to push the button.

They wouldn't do the sort of damage that would help them. Could they do it? Sure. Will they? I don't think so.
