A quick synopsis of the “Lindsay Shepherd” affair:

In late 2017, Lindsay Shepherd, a TA at WLU, gave a lecture that included a video of Jordan Peterson railing against Bill C-16 (a bill ostensibly intended to protect the trans community). The administration at WLU reprimanded Lindsay for among other things creating a “toxic environment” in the communications class she was teaching. While being reprimanded, Lindsay made an audio recording of the session, key moments of which are in the link below. The administrators at WLU say so many gobsmacking things it’s hard to know where to start:

How about, let's start with the administrators saying that their 18 year old students can't handle such harsh ideas...

Interesting to be a fly on the wall. Are critical thinking skills required to process complex issues? Is it possible that 18 year Olds do not possess these critical thinking skills yet?

Given that the issue requires and asks for critical thinking, an this TA is asked to implement support and lessons that help teach the use of correct grammar for college level writing, I am not sure the remark about what the 18 year Olds are equipped to handle is wrong. While the view could certainly be refined, it is barking up the correct tree.

I had not really paid any attention to this before but I found and read this article Inside Lindsay Shepherd’s controversial battle over free speech on campus

In this case we have a situation where a group of people who have experienced all sorts of discrimination and death threats if not worse are justified in being concerned about hate speech.

And on the other hand, there's a need for free and open debate and discussion.

I wind up not having a "this side is right" sense because both sides have perfectly valid and true concerns.

If true then the administration should stop accepting applications from those below their "intellectual maturity" threshold. Current students below that threshold receive refunds. Of course that wont happen as the excuse is pure BS used to shutdown a topic by activists working within the administration with an authoritarian ideology

My issue is, these bills, such a C-16, rarely get fair coverage and are always made out to be this horrible anti-free speech thing that will automatically get you in trouble for mis-identifing someone. In truth, however, and what never gets mentioned, is the law specifically states someone has to call a she a he (or vice versa) willingly, deliberately, and multiple times. And even some who thought for sure they would get in trouble over it they tried to refuse to take a stand and defy the law, only to have nothing happen.
Really, it's on par when Christians whine and complain because they have to be nice to non-Christian. Heaven forbid the over-privileged and comfy majority have to acknowledge the feelings of those lowly pathetic minorities. And if they have to, oh my god it's an attack on them and everything we hold dear is being torn asunder.

It seems you're arguing for kindness, and compassion, and politeness, and I suspect we all agree with those ideas. The problem is when we attempt to legislate them.
