Will any more 'Major' religions emerge?

Calif_Musk

Given that man has been around for at least 2-3 million years, and homo-sapien himself for around 200,000 years, then ALL current major religions are extremely new. Given that, do you think there will be any more emerging?

I suppose it is entirely possible. Someday Muslims and Christians might well be looked upon like many Pagans are now. Minority religions that not a whole lot of people know that much about anymore. Gone through reconstruction phases trying to reclaim that which was hindered or lost to the new religion. It's possible that in the next few thousand years that there will be new major religions and the ones that are those today will be the equivolent of Greek Reconstructionists are now. Who knows.

we will all be taught by Jehovah.
"They will all be taught by Jehovah."—JOHN 6;45
(Isaiah 54:13) And all your sons will be persons taught by Jehovah, and the peace of your sons will be abundant.

(Jeremiah 31:34) "And they will no more teach each one his companion and each one his brother, saying, ‘KNOW Jehovah!’ for they will all of them know me, from the least one of them even to the greatest one of them," is the utterance of Jehovah. "For I shall forgive their error, and their sin I shall remember no more."

(Micah 4:2) And many nations will certainly go and say: "Come, YOU people, and let us go up to the mountain of Jehovah and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will instruct us about his ways, and we will walk in his paths." For out of Zion law will go forth, and the word of Jehovah out of Jerusalem......................... this gathering of people being taught by Jehovah, is happening right now.
After these things I saw, and, look! a great crowd, which no man was able to number, out of all nations and tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, dressed in white robes; and there were palm branches in their hands. And they keep on crying with a loud voice, saying: "Salvation [we owe] to our God, who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb." revelation 7;9-10 these are the ones that will get through the GREAT TRIBULATION and then only those taught by Jehovah will remain . and the gathering goes on . and they are from ALL NATIONS.:) NICE

That's what your religion says. All religions say something different and there is no assurance that any are right. The question here is if it is possible that since your religion, as well as a few others, are in the grand scheme of things, new upstart religions, that they could be replaced by other religions that become as large if not larger than the existing major religions. Considering that the major religions in existence today are all rather new in the world, then it is reasonable to assume that eventually some new religion might eventually make it into the major religion slot left by Christianity or Islam.

What makes you think there aren't already?

If they're just "emerging" it might not be so obvious.

Such things are always easier to recognize in hindsight.

I think that man has enough imagination for a few more religions.........

Besides, I often think that we really all believe in the same God; the Culture we are in defines how we see that God, and man himself has moulded his particular "God" for political or other purposes.

it's surely possible. i think these days more than ever in man's religious history we're seeing more inter-faith comparison and dialogue, due in part to publishing and the media.

I don't think so. The philosophies of our society have moved so much towards individualism and relativism that I don't think, at least not without a huge reshaping of our societal philosophy, that any one religion would garner enough followers.

well the bible says that false religion will come to its end, because God will put it into the hearts of certain ones to destroy false religion .
And I heard another voice out of heaven say: "Get out of her, my people, if YOU do not want to share with her in her sins, and if YOU do not want to receive part of her plagues. For her sins have massed together clear up to heaven, and God has called her acts of injustice to mind. revelation 18;4
John gives us a picture of it with these words: "And the ten horns that you saw, and the wild beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her devastated and naked, and will eat up her fleshy parts and will completely burn her with fire. For God put it into their hearts to carry out his thought, even to carry out their one thought by giving their kingdom to the wild beast, until the words of God will have been accomplished."—Rev. 17:16, 17. this harlot spoken of in the book of revelation is the worldwide empire of false religion. and the book of revelation is full of symbolisim .

Greetings Calif_Musk. Just wanted to refer you and readers to an older similar thread, Could A New Major Religion Arise Today? by Sunstone: http://www.religiousforums.com/foru...477-could-new-major-religion-arise-today.html

The following is from my post there.
"I agree with many who have already posted that the existing religions give the aim that we should have and, as I have written in other threads, my belief is that each and every authentic religion has the same source and goal. We don't necessarily need a new religion since the 'answer' has been given to humankind. However, in spite of this and perhaps because of it, my answer to your question is yes, it is possible for a new major religion to arise today. In fact, I think that a new religion is emerging now that will overtake and overwhelm in time all current religions as well as represent their unification! Let me explain.

This religion is new because of the uniqueness of its members, its difference of form from current religions, and its lack of dedication to a single founder; it is not necessarily ever to be institutionalized as are current religions (but members of the new religion may remain members of any other religion as well). Rather, the new religion is based on loose organization and contact (or at minimum, new forms of organization) and it is composed of members who are the New Being that is enlightened, independent, and self sufficient and who unifies/integrates all the 'religions' within (as well as science). The New Being is his/her own religion and is the realized source and aim of current religions. Imagine a 'religion' for which all its members are enlightened. It is my belief that more New Beings are available today and with all the modern knowledge and technological sources for individuals, ever increasing numbers will be realized in the future until the new religion becomes dominant."

I see no reason why there shouldn't be more major religions surfacing. The ancient Greek religion was pretty major in it's day, and new ones came after that one.

Seeing how they've never stopped emerging, I don't see any reason for the trend not to continue.

In the 20th Century, we saw religions like Scientology and Falun Gong emerge. In the century before that, Baha'i, the Mormons and likely many others. I'm not sure what the next one will be, but I'm sure there will be one.

Baha`i's are guaranteed that another major religion will develop in a thousand years or so with another Manifestation of God. That religions havfe a "life" which develops through infancy to adolescence, to maturity, to frailness and to senility is a major tenet of the faith.

Ok, you don't get it. Like I said, that is just what your religion dictates. The bible doesn't mean anything here. The bible is for certain faiths, not all. We are talking about new faiths arising and becoming the new major religions. There are lots of religions that have risen to great heights and fallen to low numbers through these hundreds of thousands of years. Christianity and Islam are but babies in comparison to a lot of other religions. It is quite possible for them to be replaced as the major world beliefs.

I said MAJOR religions. I think Scientology has been ridiculed and discredited enough to avoid it gaining THAT status...unless the Xenu/souls/volcano stuff catches on with the teenagers!
MAJOR would be christianity, moslem, Sikh, Hindu, buddhism(maybe)

Well, according to adherents.com the Baha`i Faith is the MOST unified world religion and the second most widely spread. That makes it major in almost any sense. Falun Gong has not become wide-spread, and Scientology is not that widely spread either. It has a bare foothold in Europe, virtually no presence at all in Asia or Africa.

Adherents.com gives the most recent statistic for worldwide Scientology membership at 50,000. It's not the largest religion out there and certainly not my cup of tea, but I don't think it's anything to sneeze at... and despite the press they get, they still do manage to attract new members. And it does make the list of 20 largest religions in the United States.

If you want other major religions of the 20th Century, how about Paganism or Satanism? Religions are constantly created. Which ones will become "major" is a function of time, IMO.
