Will Humanity Avoid Social and Economic Collapse?

For a number of reasons, I figure humanity is most likely headed towards worldwide social and economic collapse within the next 50 to 100 years, with a major die off (perhaps as great as 80% of us) not far behind.

Now, I promise not to bore you by reciting the thirty or forty reasons I think that scenario might be the case, but I would like to raise one point: Although many of the problems facing humanity might be averted if we act soon enough, it is my guess that we lack the political will to do enough about such dangers to us as global climate change, nuclear proliferation, over-population, etc. -- That is, to do enough to avert reaping social and economic collapse within the next 50 to 100 years.

Assuming we are headed towards social and economic collapse, are you optimistic that we will do enough to avoid collapse? Or are you, like me, more pessimistic than optimistic?

We are past the point of no return, imo. We are in a free fall. We can try to fly. If that fails, we can only shed our fear and turn our fall into a voluntary dive.

No I think the industrial age is over. But no matter what happens, Humanity will survive.

I think you are right, and I also think that you probably expect this sooner than 50 years and are trying to be conservative in your estimate.

I also assume that the upper echelons of wealth and power are fully aware of the impossibility of continuing on the path we are on, and are making plans. These plans would probably require controlled population reduction in some form or another.

I think it is heading towards disaster for sure, but there will probably be some kind of war or major problem that will set the clock back again for the next cycle of boom and bust.

I just don't see it myself. I don't think the sky is falling but my opinion is no more valid than the next one. 50 years from now will mean very little to any of us, and 100 years from now, no one will even remember us.

This may be my inner rebel talking (which makes this possibly a self-fulfilling prophecy), but I feel it's inevitable that our society crumbles back into post-apocalyptic nomads.

yes, I think that self-destruction is inherent in human society.

How many societies have really stood the test of time?

I think it can be at least mitigated if a think-tank gets together and agrees to bend a lot of conventional morals and ethics to fix the "problem."

No! Though I see a number of ways people could think this is a natural/inevitable course, but I am more optimistic. My guess is that, this time, we do pull the rabbit out of the hat.

votes do little in the long run as parties only make policies to get themselves through the next election.

This is actually one of the failings of the democratic system.
