While much of the world is focused on other problems there is an escalating conflict between Venezuela and Guyana. Venezuela, prompted by its President Maduro, have been escalating the tensions. The root issue is a claim by Venezuela that the territory west of the Essequibo river is historically and rightfully Venezuelan. These claims are totally rejected by Guyana.
Among the most recent developments are recently approved referendums on the issue in Venezuela and subsequent proclamations by Maduro to press forward with annexing the region. Essequibo: Venezuela moves to claim region from Guyana A Guyanese Defense Force(GDF) helicopter crashed in the region (killing several crew members). The U.S. conducted a joint military exercise on December 7 in Guyana.
There is a lot of background material for this conflict. Too much to cover in just a post. I have just returned from a vacation in Guyana where tensions and concerns are high.
Do you think there will be a war between Venezuela and Guyana over the Essequibo region?
