Will There Ever Be Peace on Earth?

There always seems to be a war somewhere or a battle or some kind of riot. Do you think there will ever be a time when everyone on the earth lives in peace? Do you believe this question to be incredibly naive?

It's possible, but frankly I don't think it's probable unless something about our nature drastically changes.

In a way, yes.

There are two outcomes invmy opinion.

Either we destroy ourselves and the world will be at peace (without us).

Or we will evolve to something better.

But we will most likely experience unrest until then.

Yes, peace on earth is certain to come, but not, I believe through man's efforts. To enjoy peace, we need God's direction. The Bible promises that God's Kingdom will soon take control of the earth. (Daniel 2:44) Then, the prophecy at Psalms 46:8,9 will be fulfilled: "Come, you people, behold the activities of Jehovah, How he has set astonishing events on the earth. He is making wars to cease to the extremity of the earth. The bow he breaks apart and does cut the spear in pieces; The [war] wagons he burns in the fire." I believe true Christians today have already renounced warfare, fulfilling the prophecy at Isaiah 2:2-4.

Unless we can create a system we can all agree with, doubt it. Some people like violence.

Peace on earth will come when mankind has wiped itself out. I hope that doesn't come for a while yet.. but sometimes I think Bagley was right when he said "we're like an anthill busily manufacturing insecticide"

Only a "Yes" answer would be naive.

Four possibilities come to mind:
Genetically alter our tribal, killer-ape nature.
Universal psychological or coercive deterrence of same.
Assimilation into a Borg-like cyber society.
Extinction.

Generally, there are a lot of factors against such state occurring, making it near impossible, if not outright so. And a lot of these factors have to do with nature. Our nature, and the nature around us. However, it might occur temporarily.

With the excessively large numbers, world peace seems pretty impossible right now. If these numbers were to drastically decrease one day, may be the possibility will be more plausible. I don't know, whatever it is, if it were to happen, it necessarily requires a drastic change regarding very core matters.

One way that might help increasing the possibility of this state happening, though, is by maintaining belief in it and continuing to work towards achieving it. Most likely, if not certainly, we'll never reach it. But the closer we might get, the better.

At the risk of being a jerk...
Define "peace"...

Do you mean no "war"?
Do you mean everyone getting along with everyone else at all times?

Hells bells, not even the Brady Bunch got along with each other all the time.
It is when there are lots of people not getting along that we call it "war".

So it is my opinion the only way you will have world peace is when there is only one person left on the planet.

Unless you are also including the rest of the animal kingdom in your question.

Absolutely positively not. There's a reason why Ares is one of the Olympians and not a minor deity. Conflict is inevitable and intrinsic to both humans and reality as a whole. I would never, ever want to change that.

I think there already is peace on earth -- it just doesn't occur with every single person, at the exact same time, in any permanent fashion. It comes and goes.

I also am pretty much convinced that this particular world is the way it is by design. There's a wide range of experiences this world has to offer, some great, some not so much. I suspect we come here to have those experiences and then, when our current life-span is completed, we return to our true Home (where peace 24/7 is the norm), until the next time we want to mix things up a bit. Then we either come back here, or go elsewhere for whatever it has to offer.

I'd say it depends what you define as peace. Things are the way they've always been, forget Earth, I mean everything. Destructive, violent, cold, the universe can be described as all these. We look at humans as different because of our evolved minds, I mean are natural predators in the wild commiting genocide?

I'm not saying I agree with war or genocide or anything, I'm just pointing out it's part of the design.

The Baha'I scriptures explicitly says the most great peace shall come:

'That all nations should become one in faith and all men as brothers; that the bonds of affection and unity between the sons of men should be strengthened; that diversity of religion should cease, and differences of race be annulled—what harm is there in this?… Yet so it shall be; these fruitless strifes, these ruinous wars shall pass away, and the ‘Most Great Peace’ shall come….'

I thought I was pretty clear. I meant no war or riots- violence. I wasn't talking about small things like arguments and disagreements. And I was only speaking of humans.

At the same time there are wars, there is also places of peace. But, even so, knowing that people are being killed and maimed while I am here in the quiet typing this reply can be a little disquieting, if it comes to mind. I sometimes torture myself while I am eating something while I know there are people going hungry, including small children. It's not healthy to do that, but once in a while, it does happen.

I do believe these kind of questions to be naive, because they mock billions of people who know that there will never be World Peace, everywhere, perpetually and certainly not where they live. To these people it sounds like whoever makes these claims is completely detached from the cultural realities in the world.
Instead adults should focus on how to make their own lives constructive and better, how to help their own communities, and perhaps also improve things in other parts of the world if they have the possibility. They can do all that without preaching world peace. Save that for the Miss Americas.
Me, I'll be happy with progress on a much more smaller scale. Perhaps better results in this round of talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians (because I happen to live here), perhaps Egypt and Syria stabilizing themselves gradually. With all due respect to humans everywhere, there is not much I can do for North Koreans who are sent to camps, but maybe someone else can.

Maybe there will be a time, many centuries from now that humanity will find a balance, and will eliminate conflict. But that is very hypothetical and uncertain. We are just as likely to engage in more wars and violence in the centuries to come.

Even then, a person may still be at war with him/herself.

I certainly hope for peace on earth, but given our nature, that's probably not going to happen. At least for a while.
