Windows 10....Evil Cancer

So I was rummaging around in RF, when suddenly my computer shut down & started installing Windows 10. As this unexpectedly & automated process takes place, I'm on my phone now.
Weird.

There's an option for you to disable automatic install and do it manually.

[Edited] Actually, I missed the true context of this. MS is forcing folks to 10. Windows 10 isn't so bad. I like it more than previous windows but yes, you'll have to get used to the new interface.

What more is there to say? Getting a proprietary OS is like buying a dolls' house. You can change the decorations, but not the basic design. Linux is like Lego: it can be assembled into whatever you want. We don't all have the same computers and use the same programs to do the same things.

The basic system (the kernel) is very small, hence its use in routers, TVs, phones, etc. Programs share their libraries, so the complete system is small. The user-interface is just software, so you get a choice: plain, fancy, big, small, weird... If you get all your software from your distributor, then they take care of all the security patches and bug-fixes. And distributions can have an awful lot of software: no searching the internet for something that actually works and isn't malware.

and this demonstrates to me...how much a dinosaur I have become.

I grew up with my grandparents who were born in 1901 and 02

so this laptop came with windows and the promise of upgrade when available....for free

except for the continual need for upgrades....I'm learning to live with it
and the upgrades are for potential viral attacks?.....is that right?

or does the OS report me to Big Brother with each upgrade?

( I like to search topics that are risque)

The only way I see around incompatible updates is to use cloud software.
The vendor would handle all compatibility issues.
But this has a troublesome area too, ie, integrating 2 different products.
If one uses a management system integrated with the ubiquitous Quickbooks, compatibility is marginal at best.
I dread the arrival of that inevitable day.
I'd pay extra for integrated accounting (which I have now).

Cloud integration is the devil.
You know I work in ERP, right? Big software that does EVERYTHING you could ever need, at one low cost of...well...maybe not so low. And maybe not QUITE everything.

So...let's go with 'Big software that does a few of the things you want for just a negotiable percentage of your bank balance, plus a portion of your sanity'

Surprisingly, I don't work in sales.

That's the difference with Linux. When the Gnome desktop altered in version 3, I took a look, said "Not on my computer, you don't!", and switched interfaces. Way back in the 1980s I had to get used to my computers, but in the 21st century I expect my computers to get used to me.

So does Windows 10 look much different to the previous one?
I have it.

It looks much like windows 8 but with a few really good features added and a couple of irritating features removed.

They did change the settings interface which i dont like.

This being said i think it is an overall inprovement and worth upgrading.

Wait until it starts calling you Dave.

Back in Windows 95 and 2000 days I had my computer, in my office, say "Just what do you think your doing Dave" at boot up and shut down and whenever someone moved the mouse to get to the logon screen. It kept the people that worked in my office, who were trying to get my admin passwords nervous

and I was alerted to any incoming e-mails with

lol...

Dunno if you're familiar with SAP, but they're basically the biggest (and most German) fish in the ERP pond. The particular fish I work with is Swedish, although I've worked for a smaller Australian ERP previously.
The cool part is I get to work with very large operational companies, which is interesting. Lots of engineers. ;)
