Woman says legacy restaurants are closing because nobody will work for them

Businesses like that who dont pay their workers deserve to be closed in the first place.

Good riddance to bad businesses.
My daughter is in college and works as a server. She gets 2 something an hour but takes home between $22-$28/hour with tips. If they had to pay her $22/hr she would not have a job. If she thought she was getting screwed she would just quit. She works hard no doubt, but she thinks it is worth it.

I used to envy my sister when she worked as a waitress. She would literally bring home a grocery bag full of money and counted it on the table of tips she made for the evening she then used that money to put herself through college.

She made more money waitressing than I did trucking , but truth be told it depends upon where you work where tips may be good or tips may be lousy , so I'm an advocate for paying people who do that kind of work a proper living wage because tips won't always get them through if they don't work in a place that is ideal for making a lot of money via tipping.

Why not?

I mean, apparently the market will bear it. You imply that customers are already paying enough that the business owners could do this without raising prices, so why is it such an unreasonable idea?

Even if paying them the wage you want eliminates jobs? No one is owed a living wage by any employer. I know it is just one example but the place my daughter works (national chain) is always looking for servers willing to work. They can all make what my daughter makes if they want.

Maybe if they fully explain the prices and don't allow tips. But the servers like my daughter would rather get the tips because the potential for making more money is real enough.

Wait. You say you’re an advocate for a proper living wage but then feign outrage in the thread about California’s $20 minimum wage. Which is it?

Possibly, but I've also heard from younger women who make good tips as servers that they'd rather feel like they didn't have to wear low-cut tops or do an 8-hour shift in heels.

The whole point of working is to make a living. Not half a living, or a quarter of a living. Exception of course is supplemental income. "0)

You’re saying two different things in two threads about similar topics. Makes one wonder where you truly stand.
Nope. I wasn't saying two different things.

I stand by people who want a living wage, but point out the issues when the minimum wages is brought to speed.

That should settle it.

I agree with the purpose of working. But how is that the employers responsibility?
If you want someone to work for you it is your responsibility to pay them enough so they can live while working for you.

Would you want someone working full time for you living on the streets because they can't afford rent? Or would you want them suffering from malnutrition because they can't afford food?

And new ones will undoubtedly emerge to replace them, and we see this happening all the time.
That is the truth of it. We workers are always threatened with "don't complain because someone will do it for less than you" or some other garbage to keep us in our place.
Well, it works both ways. They want to throw a hissy fit and shut down? Others who are willing to comply or even go beyond I have no doubts appreciate the extra business.
