World changing events

Which world changing events have you lived through that has impacted and changed the way you lived or thought the most? Some examples could be the internet, COVID, the increase of mass shootings, 9/11, etc

For me it would be the popularization of smart phones. I can't even imagine not having a pocket sized super computer that I can utilize 24/7 whenever I want that keeps me connected to all aspects of my life

What about you guys?

I think smartphones sounds about right. Though for me, its disconnected me. I am less connected to friends and family. I sit in the living room with my husband and sons, everyone's got their nose in a screen, ignoring each other.

I won't get one. When non-internet phones go the way of the dinosaur, folks will have to contact me by carrier pigeon. I've gone as far as I'm willing.

COVID actually disrupted my life little; not a lot changed. Though, it did start the homeschooling adventure.

I remember the year after the Columbine shooting... the anniversary came, and I was terrified. Not because I thought another shooting was coming, but because I was overwhelmed by the nasty comments and looks from other kids, all assuming I was a danger because of my blue hair and black clothes... (That was probably a good reason the anxiety kicked in bad enough to cause me to seek a smaller school eventually).

9/11 was confusing to a high school kid. I can't say it impacted me much, other than feeling sad for families affected.

The social revolution of the '60s, and the anti-war movement.

Smart phones? I do have one, and I understand it can connect to the internet, receive e-mail, allow text messaging, &c, but I don't know how to do these things, so it just functions as an old-fashioned telephone. I check it every few days for messages, and occasionally phone someone.

I never carry it with me. It just lives on a shelf in my bedroom.

There are probably quite a few world-changing events I've lived through. Although since you mention smart phones, I will say there was one thing I had been pining for decades before it was finally invented and implemented: Caller ID.

The experience of seeing many freedoms and liberties being systematically stripped away in front of my very eyes has been an unsettling and concerning experience in contrast of what I was taught in the past on the matter on the value of having liberty and freedom.

I do however note as well that society was far more cloistered and sheltered in the past and now is exposed to what can only be seen as the real face of humanity through the massive lens of worldwide social media incurring the results of media overload and culture shock as each generation of people push foreword their own collective objectives as a result.

Such events have caused an urgency to adapt and approach the changes that more then likely were hidden by others before the truth reveals itself as to how it really is and has been all along with people.

I see it as a kind of Renaissance, but also a considerable Dark Age as well by which both are simultaneous depending upon who you are , where you are , and what you are at present.

The integration of public schools, followed by www. Access to differences with a welcoming openness to learn is world changing.

I'd like to add a monumental event that went by quietly, but was most definitely world-changing and world-influencing. We just passed the 50th anniversary of women in the U.S. being allowed by law, to go into debit without a male co-signer!

My first house as an adult did not have my name on it. My father and husband were the owners. I was 40 years old before I had a car in my name.
