Worship on RF

No idea. I just don't know what worship is, nor if I am capable of it or willing to practice it.

I worship reason. I don't mean this as a cheap jab. It's hard to put into words the quasi-spiritual connection that I feel towards logic and rationality.

I don't just mean my capacity to reason, either. Brilliant displays of reason invoke awe in me. Has anyone here read Leibniz or Euclid? More than that, I believe that there is a logical order to the universe itself, which I venerate. That's why I consider myself to be a pantheist.

The veneration there is honestly a bit troubled. If I was designing the universe, I would not have allowed herbivores to exist. The only life that would be capable of sustaining itself would be varieties of plant-life that could peacefully coexist, forming complex ecosystems of mutualists. Through them, webs of consciousness could emerge from complex root structures and they could gain the self-awareness that's necessary to develop reason. This would allow logic to become formalized without requiring nearly as much suffering as the ruthless competition and food chains that are present on our planet.

Of course, I don't think the logic of the universe intentionally designed anything, so I can forgive it for its cruelty. It doesn't know what it's doing to us. It's only beginning to become aware of that through us. Maybe we can improve the way things are some day.

There are things for which I have reverence, but there is nothing I find worthy of worship.

Regrettably (for you), the carnivores also exist in equilibrium with the herbivores. Many a times, it is difficult to draw a line between the two. :)

Huh. I use those words interchangeably. What's the distinction you make between the two? Not just in terms of the word/label/thing - words often obscure the substance of they are pointing to - but in terms of what the differences is for tangible practice or behavior? How do they look different with respect to what we do? Is reverence, for example, just thoughts of devotion while worship burns incense? I'm kinda curious about this... haha.

Reverence is a sense/feeling of respect or admiration for someone or something, whereas worship is the act of honoring or devoting oneself to someone or something.

I guess the primary difference for me is reverence is passive, whereas worship is active.
