Reason, and reason again
Hey everyone! I guess this is geared more towards people with religious backgrounds, but I want to see everyone's responce!

Would you ever vote in an atheist and/or an atheist? If so- how far? City council? Senators? Possibly president?

Absolutely. I would MUCH rather have an atheist than someone who wanted to rule the whole council/city/country on the precepts of a single religion. Generally speaking, though, I don't care what a person's religion is.

I agree on that point, Lintu, but I'd vote for a responsible religious man, who wouldn't do that, over an irresponsible atheist. And vice versa.

Let's see -

On one hand, we have Sunstone (an atheist) -
On the other hand, we have Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, or James Dobson.

Against my better judgement, I'd have to go with Sunstone. At least he is accessible to us here at RF. :)

I vote for candidates based on their policies, and not on their religion. I'm an agnostic myself, so i'm not one to say that I wouldn't trust an agnostic.

I voted lib dem in the UK election 3 days ago. I know not whether charles kennedy is religious, and to me it doesn't matter. What does matter is what the candidates have in mind for Britain.

Religion can hurt a cantidate as much as it would help. I dont see myself voting against my beliefs, but I dont see myself voting for a crook moron either. For me its not going to be an issue come election, but I dont want to see an Athiest win mayor then cut funding for places of worship. I also dont want to see a Baptist win mayor then place God in public places. So its allways going to be narowed down to the individuals that are capagning.

Crystallas, I don't to put words in your mouth, but did you mean you thought an athiest mayor might try to repeal the property tax exemption for places of worship? Otherwise, governments do not provide such funding.

Well stated and I concur....at least as far as public servants go. I mean, I wouldn't vote for an athiest or agnostic for an officer in our church. Sorry, but I hope everyone understands.:p

None of the above, I don't like politcs. It just confuses everything.

We all need food, we all need shelter, we all need protection from persecution. Everytime a government is set into power, no matter how good it starts out, inevitably it starts loose it's luster so to speak.

Search for Church Grants on your fav search engine. The church I go to gets about $4400 a month in grants in addition to tax exemptions. I have seen one mayor cantidate from an election about 10 years ago saying he was going to remove all grants to faith based orginizations. Which none of them spent the money on practice of faith, only activities to keep kids off the streets and family festivals. So dont take my comment as ignorant just yet. I have a reason for saying what I said.

Also thats an excellent site to look up statistics on goverment funding for faith based orginizations and what it does all rolled up into a quickie article.

The link you provided was an analysis of an opinion poll. I would have prefered the actual funding and an impartial analysis of how the charity interfaced to those in need.

I would vote for anyone strenghening the wall of separation. Tax breaks would be a good start.
