ou don't eat, drink, bathe, anoint your body with lotions or creams, wear leather shoes, or have sex. You wear white and spend the entire day immersed in prayer. No matter who you are, or what your station in life, once a year you have an opportunity to experience something transcendent.
Yom Kippur is a day of total purity.
No, food isn't evil or dirty (neither are any of the other things you refrain from doing on Yom Kippur), rather Yom Kippur is a complete cleanse. You go deep, introspect, get a handle on your failures and shortcomings, and resolve to do better. Physically you purge your system, too, and emerge from the day revived and refreshed.
What about pre-gaming and post-gaming? Yom Kippur is the highest and holiest, and the meals before and after are festive and celebratory. Set the table, wear your finest, and dope up on carbs, protein, or caffeine, or whatever else will either help you get through the day, or will revive you after the fast.
G'mar chatima tova ve Shabbat Shalom to you, your families and everyone!!
