You Better Believe Kamala Harris Is a “Real” American

They certainly have a stronger case for it. And so would those who were dragged here and suffered at the hands of those doing the dragging.
Indeed.
But there are also those élites who claim they arrived with the Mayflower. They claim they are the real Americans and have always looked down on people of a different skin color.

Maybe the real Americans are MLK Jr. And RFK who actually did something for truth and justice.
Not the Mayflower people.

Personally, I think a term like "real American" should be wadded up and chucked in the garbage.

What makes one an American is being born in or sworn in.
Yeah. It basically is a term/concept of xenophobic, racist, classist nationalism, the sort that expects and demands adherence to silly rituals and absurd idolatry.
We were born here. That's about as "real" as you're gonna get.

Only Native Americans are real Americans.
Europeans are all immigrants.
I really don't believe that native population of what is now the North and South America continet used the term America to denote the area they lived in.
FYI the term America was derived from Martin Waldseemuller in 1507 to denote the southern part of the continet after Amerigo Vespucci who he mistakenly assumed discovered it. He later removed reference to Amerigo, but the name America stuck.

It all depends on "your" definition of what "real American" means to you.
If you think all it means is that either your were born in the United States or became a citizens at a later date so be it.
However, I don't think "anyone" can define what a "real American" is to everyone.
To me, being a "real American" is something you feel in your gut if you are asked if that person is a "real American, not clearly defined attributes.
Just for fun, I asked ChatGPT and that answer agrees with me so I like it:

The term "real American" is subjective and can mean different things to different people, often shaped by cultural, political, and personal beliefs. Historically, it has been used to describe someone who embodies values often associated with American identity, such as patriotism, hard work, freedom, and a commitment to democracy. However, this term can also be contentious, as it has been used to include or exclude people based on various criteria like race, religion, political views, or cultural practices.
In a broader sense, a "real American" could be anyone who identifies with and contributes to the diverse fabric of American society, regardless of their background, beliefs, or origin. It's a concept that reflects the complex and multifaceted nature of American identity.

He was a man of his time, clearly, but John Winthrop and his famous sermon are part of the "DNA" of the US. And the reaction to what we do reflects this. We're expected to live up to our ideals and castigated when we so often fall short. John Winthrop Dreams of a City on a Hill, 1630 | The American Yawp Reader

For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world. We shall open the mouths of enemies to speak evil of the ways of God, and all professors for God’s sake. We shall shame the faces of many of God’s worthy servants, and cause their prayers to be turned into curses upon us till we be consumed out of the good land whither we are going.

wow...and these were the Puritans, right?

Because they were "pure" evidently. Unlike the Native Americans.

You just did.
I'll add being born in another country to US citizens.

Even Trump is a "real American",
albeit the worst example since
John Wayne Gacy.

No, they're Europeans.
But former Europeans who immigrate
here are real Ameristanians....as are
those who descended from aboriginals.
"Real American" is much broader than
you believe.
Although some, like Ahnold, are limited
in that they aren't eligible to become Prez.

You should read history of the Puritans. They were people of their time and had many crazy ideas from our current perspective. But they, like the Quakers and Catholics came to America to be free to worship God in the way they thought was correct and to be free of the discrimination and corruption existing in Europe.

I am in no way ignoring the horrible atrocities committed by their descendants including how the Native American were treated, slavery and all the rest. That was considered proper in that era which included subjugation, exploitation and colonization of Africa, Asia, South America etc.

Not to mention the unholy Vatican who did the rest in Latin America...by justifying the genocide of the Natives there.

As a Me'tis, I fully agree with you.

I haven’t seen anyone claim Kamala Harris is not a real American, what I have seen is both sides disgustingly using race to try and garner votes.

It's by implication rather than by direct statement. Specifically from the Wall Street Journal as the headline indicates:

Campaign Lays Bare Debate Over What It Means to Be a ‘Real American’

The two party conventions also offered a more direct engagement in the battle to define American identity. When Hulk Hogan, the retired WrestleMania star, took the stage shortly before Trump accepted the GOP nomination, he wore a shirt that said “Real American.” He then explained what the term meant to him.
“I found out I was in a room full of real Americans,” he said, referring to the convention hall and the loyalty of GOP delegates to Trump. “When Donald J. Trump becomes the president of the United States, all the real Americans are going to be nicknamed Trumpites, because all the Trumpites are going to be running wild for four years,” he said.
