Something that's worth noting - especially for younger members who have grown up in this bizarre political era - is how utterly weird and abnormal it is for a presidential candidate to even consider not taking the debate floor. With the invention of and accessibility of things like television, debates have been an expected and normal part of the political process since the 1960s. Since that time, only one presidential candidate has shirked this responsibility and attempted to coward out of it.

For some, that breaking of tradition is laudable. For others, it's a warning sign of an unhealthy democracy. The entire point of a public servant, after all, is to serve the public. A major way of showing the public how one plans to serve is through articulating and debating policy they plan to implement. Televised debates are not the only way to do this, certainly, but a well-moderated debate can be very telling. Especially in this age, where information infrastructure too often gets stuck in echo chamber mode, debates break the echo chamber and force actual dialogue. Or at least that is how it is supposed to work.

Trump wants to rig an environment of MAGA to hurl insults at Kamala Harris. That's not a debate. He's scared ****less of a real debate with just him and her on stage.

He agreed to a debate but now is hiding in his closet because it's no longer Biden.

She should counter-propose a debate where it's MSNBC and a stadium full of her supporters first. That would be fair and balanced.

This was the same propaganda that was said by the left prior to the Biden debate. Trump agreed to every demand by Biden and you saw what happened. It is Trump's turn to make demands. Harris has not answered any questions since she was coronated. She cannot think on her feet. She will not do well.

Because he agreed to debate on Sept 4th.

Popcorn and drinks at the concessions booth.
He didn't agree to debate. After he chickened out of a debate, both he and Harris agreed upon, he is now proposing a different date on a different channel. It is up to Harris to agree - or propose a different date and channel on her own.

I hope they can both agree on a new date and modality for the debate - and that Trump will show up.

This is all so laughable. Trump agreed to all of Biden's terms and Biden failed miserably. It is Trump's turn to make some demands. The accusation that he is scared is ridiculous, Trump is actually doing interviews now while Harris is not. Trump needs to shift gears to debate Harris after her fascist party installed her as the new candidate. I wonder who Trump will actually be running against on election day because if Harris sinks in the polls the undemocratic democrat party will install someone else they think can win.

Total non sequitur.
I only said that Trump cannot agree to a debate when it isn't even clear if Harris has been invited.
Can we agree on that?

It is worth pointing out that both parties agreed to the terms, I highly doubt it was a unilateral demand from anyone.

It is Trump's turn to make some demands.
He can make any demands he wants, but there will need to be some compromise. Something Trump is not known for.

Both candidates are holding press conferences and taking questions. This is silly.

That's fine, he can take time and propose a different time frame. His request is not that, it is a restructure of the entire process which I doubt the Democrats will agree to.

It would not be a sound political strategy to change candidates again, this statement is meaningless.

Agreed means both parties agreed. His announcement means nothing. I can say I have agreed to pitch for the Detroit Tigers but it means squat unless the Tigers agreed to actually hire me.
Trump is just spewing his usual lies in an attempt to distract his cult followers from his refusal to uphold his previous commitment
