You Could Save More Than One Life - Join the Donor Registration!

You can print out and fill out an organ donor registration card from this website:

http://www.organdonor.gov/signup1.html

This is also a good resource for myths and facts about organ and tissue donation.

You do not have to be dead to donate tissue! You can join the national registry of bone marrow transplant donors, and possibly save someone from a horrible death from Leukemia. I joined about a year ago but unfortunately was not a match for anyone...maybe you will have more luck than I did. The procedure is very simple, they just take a bit of your blood and test it. That's all. Doesn't hurt that much. I only screamed a little.

I urge you to consider this because there are only a few million people on the registry and every new person is another chance that someone will find the perfect match for them to recover from a horrible disease!!!

I also urge you all to look into organ donation for after your death because you won't be using them anymore anyway and you could really save someone's life and be somebody's angel!!!

I have considered it (under Swedish rules), but I'm afraid I'm past the "best before" date. I used do donate blood (every month; more frequently than allowed today), but now I'm on aspirin to hopefully prevent a second stroke, so they don't want me. A pity, because I always felt much better, physically as well as mentally, after donating.

I wish I could donate blood or bone marrow. I have a terrible phobia of needles and had a panic attack the last time I tried to donate blood. :( I'm donating my organs to those who need them and my body to science when I die, though.

Jensa what happens if there comes a time when you NEED to get blood for a test or a tranfusion or something?

When my sister was 11 she had to be held down by 5 doctors so they could get blood from her, lol. She got grounded for her bad behavior, but nothing my parents could do could ever convince her to not be deathly afraid of needles.

I'm a registered organ doner, and glad. I rather like the concept that in death, I will still be supporting life.

Yeah some people like my husband can't give blood because of their medications. I don't think you have to be under any certain age to donate tissue like bone marrow, as long as you're relatively healthy.

The best thing to do if you are registered is make sure your family knows about it and that you've signed the card or put donor on your drivers license or in your will. Lots of people die every day for lack of a bone or organ donation, some of them children. One of my friends died of lukemia at age 12.

No one would want any of my 'bits'; heck, I'm not even keen on them myself!!
Seriously A) I'm too old b) i'm on too many drugs
But I'm grateful for whoever donated the four pints of blood I had to have when I had my hip replaced!!!!:)

They can test blood type with a prick on the finger. Small pricks don't bother me, it's just something about a needle poking into a vein that horrifies me to no end.

And if I needed a transfusion I doubt I'd be in a state to protest a needle. ;)

I'm just gonna leave that one alone... :biglaugh:

Now, just let me get my mind back out of the gutter... I've actually been on the organ donor registry since I turned 18. I've never donated blood or bone marrow though, cause I'm a bit like Jensa in the whole needle thing.

LMAO. Bastet, that was great. I can't believe my gutter mind didn't pick that one up. :biglaugh: Guess that explains the lesbian thing, huh?

I've got my donor card filled out.... as for giving blood, that's quite an ordeal with my very small veins, but I may try again someday.

I tried to give blood once but they wouldn't do it because like Maize I had very small viens. The nurse poked and prodded and put a rubber band on my arm and finally gave up and told me to go home and get some rest and try again some other day. But every time I go to get blood taken they say the same thing, where's the vien?
