I learned German by reading warning signs.

I've submitted a report to Google advising them that the company's on-line translator is malfunctioning.

@Amanaki , I have a similar problem with French. English is ubiquitous but French isn't.

I'd recommend DVDs or Blurays featuring an audio track in the chosen language.

These days, I read that German dubbing artists render American "mumbling" in a very precise and well-pronounced way because most have a training in classical theatre which requires them to pronounce words very clearly.

Kannst du eine deutsche Fernsehserie empfehlen, in der ich beim Erlernen der deutschen Sprache einige Hörfähigkeiten erlernen kann?

You can answer in English but it would be good for me to learn to read and understand your answer if you choose to answer back in your native German language :)

Bad Banks ist eine deutsch-luxemburgische Fernsehserie. Die Fernsehserie wurde 2017 von Letterbox Filmproduktion und Iris Productions in Koproduktion mit dem ZDF und arte produziert. Die erste Staffel wurde im Februar 2018 erstmals ausgestrahlt, die zweite Staffel folgt im Februar 2020.

German is gutteral and harsh,
I think it sounds beautiful. You should try listening to Ramstein to hear a fine example of the beauty in German. He also doesn't sound like he hauch und schlürs everything together like other Germans.

I find it a rather poetic language.

Ein gedicht von Christian Morgenstern

DER WERWOLF

Ein Werwolf eines Nachts entwich
von Weib und Kind und sich begab
an eines Dorfschullehrers Grab
und bat ihn: »Bitte, beuge mich!«

Der Dorfschulmeister stieg hinauf
auf seines Blechschilds Messingknauf
und sprach zum Wolf, der seine Pfoten
geduldig kreuzte vor dem Toten:

»Der Werwolf«, sprach der gute Mann,
»des Weswolfs, Genitiv sodann,
dem Wemwolf, Dativ, wie mans nennt,
den Wenwolf, -- damit hats ein End.«

Dem Werwolf schmeichelten die Fälle,
er rollte seine Augenbälle.
»Indessen«, bat er, »füge doch
zur Einzahl auch die Mehrzahl noch!«

Der Dorfschulmeister aber mußte
gestehn, dass er von ihr nichts wußte.
Zwar Wölfe gäbs in grosser Schar,
doch »Wer« gäbs nur im Singular.

Der Wolf erhob sich tränenblind--
er hatte ja doch Weib und Kind!
Doch da er kein Gelehrter eben,
so schied er dankend und ergeben.

English sounds beautiful to me, too...but I've been told by more than one non-native English speaker that it doesn't sound wonderful to THEM....along with being the most difficult language there is too learn except Navaho.

I usually hear English isn't too bad. And it's certainly not Navajo or Mandarin. English just has so many words from so many languages that spelling is tricky, and we too many examples of one word having multiple meanings and pronunciations.

Very easy grammar...
Very difficult pronunciation...just think we Italians have 7 vowel sounds only...and understanding the difference between man and men, phonetically is excrutiatingly tough:p

Ich bin zwar, anders als viele andere, die hier antworten, deutscher Muttersprachler aber ich kann Dir nicht mit Fernsehserien helfen. Ich habe seit über 20 Jahren keinen Fernseher mehr. Eine gute Idee wäre es mit Kindersendungen anzufangen, zum Beispiel "Sendung mit der Maus". Die Sprache ist klar und einfach und machmal lernt man auch als Erwachser noch etwas.

I am, other than most respondents, a native German speaker but I can't help you with TV series. I don't own a TV since over 20 years. I good idea would be to try some kids programs like "Sendung mit der Maus". It's got clear and easy language and even as an adult you may learn something you didn't know.

"Sendung mit der Maus" is on YouTube. sendung mit der maus - YouTube
