The 7-38-55 rule in communication

This article was insightful to me because it is my observation that I responded positively to people who spoke roughly to me but with friendly body language than people who spoke politely but with an unfriendly body language. In that sense, the formula is correct .

So it is not just about polite words, but friendly tone of voice and body language as well. Polite words can emerge from etiquette, but friendly tone of voice and body language has a lot to do with intrinsic character and values, imho and helps in better connection.

Polite words is also always better than impolite words as well, and etiquette has also its value in relationship management. I do not underestimate it.

The rule, as it's usually cited, states that 7 percent of communication is conveyed by our words, 38 percent comes via our tone of voice, and 55 percent comes through body language.
Reading this makes me think I must be autistic.
Only 7% is the actual words !!?!?!?!??!!?

Yeah. That's why neurotypicals are hard to communicate with. They put so very little of what they mean and are saying into what they are actually saying. A.d even among neurotypicals it causes miscommunications. With my ex, I even spent most or all of our relationship erroneously thinking she had certain likes or dislikes just because the way she worded something.

This makes sense in that the words, and the tone of voice are both connected to the audio centers of the brain. This neural apparatus is rooted on the subjectivity of the matrix of human language. There is no natural cause and effect between sound/words, and nature, in human languages. When did a cat ever say the word/sound "cat". So why is it called "a cat", instead of a "meow"? The latter would be more natural and universal. The matrix of language is arbitrary as evident by there being about 6000 modern human languages. Any noise can mean anything if we all agree or accept. Word sounds can also have many meanings, to create subjective confusion; Fascist or Socialism.

Body language, on the other hand, would be assessed by the visual centers. The sense of sight is far more natural. It is based on the language of light and photons; colors, shapes, textures, shines, shadows, hi lights, etc., from the environment, entering the eyes and then the brain, without any human subjectivity at the front end; red is red and a polished red apple is shiny. We are taught the words red and shiny, but the photons for red and shiny going to the eyes, are the same for all, even before we can speak words, and then throughout our life. Science is about seeing; experiments and not just reading words and accepting.

The problem is this 7-38-57 rule, although useful for natural and sincere people, can be gamed. For example, this rule is why they have pretty young starlets doing News and Weather. They will not use ugly peoole. The pretty will create a better visual reaction; they will get an immediate 57, via their beauty and rehearsed body language, thereby seeming more credible to those people who assumes the 7-38-57 rule cannot be gamed by acting and marketing.

A good case in point was the late AM radio talk show personality; Rush Limbaugh. He was the King of the AM talk shows for nearly the entire history of the genre, until his death in 2021. He was unique to all media. It would be like the number one TV show since the start of TV, all the same show. Limbaugh had a TV show in the early part of his expanding career, that did not do as well, even though he said the same things on both TV and radio.

The reason was he was overweight and not very handsome in the classic pretty boy or rugged man sense. The over value of the 57 visual body language; watch him on TV, took away from his real talent; which was audio; 7-38-0. On TV, Instead of listening to his words, many people would fixate on his less than optimized visual appeal; negative judgement, and put too much emphasis on the irrelevant, and less on the relevance of his ideas. The Left hated him, since they cannot get past visual one size fits all of visual surfaces; color, race, sex, etc.

Once his TV show was canceled, after four seasons, he specialized himself to just the radio, which only uses 7-38-0. His words, arguments, sense of humor and sincerity, resonated with millions of listeners for decades. Nobody, but Limbaugh, could talk for three hours, five days a week, without any guests, and still have a same captive audience for decades. He was like hanging with a friend on the phone.

The Kennedy and Nixon, TV debates, favored the young, handsome and tanned Kennedy, over the older, pale and sweaty Nixon, even though Nixon was a brilliant man. There was an immediate 0-0-57 edge for Kennedy, especially with females. This set the pattern for TV influence; 0-0-57. Now fake TV news can smile and pretend for the eyes, and still win the majority of the time; 57%, even with lame arguments. The shallow are like fish in a 57% barrel. If you close your eyes and get away from visual gaming; radio talk shows, you can get deeper, albeit, within the matrix of language, view. Using talk radio to attract the Liberal, does not work. Their shows fail. They do eat better with visual based 0-0-57, identity politics, with the correct PC ratio of human visual props audiences and news clip visual bad guys.
