John 20-26-28
26. And after eight days again His disciples were inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst, and said, "Peace be with you."
27. Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand, and put it into My side; and be not unbelieving, but believing."
28. Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
Thanks
Agreed! Thomas was a Jew, and for him to call anyone "...
my God!" who was not actually God would have been blasphemous.
God was in Jesus is what that means. That does not mean that Jesus was God Himself (John 14:28:)
God worked through the apostles also, yet I don't recall anyone referring to Peter, Matthew or John as "My God!". Why can't it mean just what it says?
John 14:28
English Standard Version (ESV)
(28)You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father,
for the Father is greater than I.
Jesus is God incarnate, born of God through Mary, so he always had a dual nature. Even so, the Father was always greater when Jesus spoke as a man, but I'm not sure how some say Jesus wasn't God when scripture tells us otherwise:
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “
God with us.” Matthew 1:23
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)
As a man he was subject to the rule of the Father just as all men are, and did nothing he did not see the Father doing first (John 5:19), just as all men should do nothing but follow in the path of God (Psalm 17:6, Psalm 25:10). But although Jesus was God, he did not seek to use that to his advantage, or to claim as a man he was equal to God, because man is not equal to God.
"Who,
being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage" Philippians 2:6
These verses don't tell us Jesus was not God, but that he was God, and since there is only
one God (not many "Gods" as the pagans believed) Jesus cannot possibly be a separate, distinct God from the Almighty unless you believe in some form of polytheism (which has gained remarkable resurgence from post Millerite groups like Jehovah Witnesses, Christadelphians, and the Mormon church).
The only doctrine I've come across that reconciles Jesus and scripture while keeping traditional monotheistic belief is Trinitarianism, which may explain why some groups fight tooth and nail to mis-explain it as
Tritheism.
