  • Wow. Just... wow.
How do proponents of "atheistic" Samkhya and Mimamsa respond to this?

Is it similar to discussing not-self with some Buddhists, who interpret it so rigidly?
Oh wow, so it is explicitly there. When will the misinterpretation vanish?

I can believe that it is Western influence that has helped cause misinterpretation.
Rather than ask the natives, or have the natives write up their text themselves, it has often been left to the Westerners, who have interpreted it through their own biases.

I think that sometimes it has been misunderstanding, and other times it has been try to find a way to get the natives, who are reluctant to leave their religion, to adopt the Westerner's religions and ideals, hoping that the Westerner's religions will survive.
In more recent times, I imagine it is because the concept of "God", in any form, is no longer seen as positive.

What can you tell me about Brahman in Mimamsa? :)

Have you considered bringing this up in Site Feedback?
    Hi atanu,

That's a good point, I never thought about that. It may be worth bringing it up in Site Feedback. I think having a Non-Theistic Other Dharmic DIR would be very useful. It may be worth mentioning that, for the sake of less hassle within the Hindu DIR, which is already very varied (Advaita, Dvaita, Saiva, Vaisnava, etc) that there needs to be some boundaries imposed there on what actually Hinduism is, I think. :)

I didn't know that the Mimamsa, Samkhya etc were not necessarily atheistic; is this another one of other scholars deciding it, like what has happened with Confucianism?

Confucianism believes in Heaven, and Heaven has a will, etc, but so many people now think Confucianism has no god because of Neo-Confucian (Buddhist and Taoist inspired) and Western scholars. To point out otherwise is to truly upset them!
Aup. has a special personal philosophy and he is imposing it. He uses the name of Brahman while rejecting consciousness and all that is meant by Brahman. He even has a WIKI page on this unique idea that the astika vedic darsanas were actually nastika darsanas. We have no problem with his ideas, provided that that is not hoisted as Hindu dharma. They want to show that Samkhya, Mimamsa etc. were atheistic. I think creating a forum for this will do great damage.

I think creating a forum "Non-Theistic/Atheistic Indian Philosophies" will do a better justice to him and all of us.
Hi I see only Aup. as the only representative of this class. Probably earlier he was Kaisesose or something.

Further, I do not think that Mimamsa, Samkhya are atheistic. These uphold the Veda, which itself records that the verses were revealed to the sages by Dhatar (controller), Vishnu, Agni. Veda surely talks of the inner controller -- controller of the ego self.

Samkhya talks of a special purusha that helps one to cross the ocean of samsara. Patanjali yoga talks of Ishwara pranidhana as essential for yoga. Finally, Samkhya is talked of as a foundational darsana (philosophy) in Gita, which surely teaches of surrender to Ishwara as the easiest way to Moksha.
Brother atanu, I was wondering: do you think that the Hindu DIR should be split, slightly?
On the forum at least, there seem to be many who deny Ishwara, but consider themselves to be Hindu.
Do you think it would be more constructive to create a "Hindu Atheism" subsection, so Hindu Atheism can be placed there? There, it can be Mimamsa, Samkhyas, etc?

Then, Hindu sections could be theistic by default, without telling the others they are not Hindu?
ah, it seems i am in exalted company then...that's the way i see it and i'm sticking to it!
