  • Hey there! I've been reading a new translation of the Gathas, and in the introduction it states that the Avestan language's sentence structures and grammar indicate that it is older than Sanskrit... Have you heard anything about that? I'm not sure I believe that. =/

    I do not know. Modern Sanskrit came between 800 BC and 400 BC, Panini's time is uncertain. The proto-Vedic/Proto-Zoraster Indo-Iranian will be older than both. Avestan language should be compared to Vedic Sanskrit. Now parts of Vedas will be in proto-Vedic, some properly Vedic, and some close to modern Sanskrit. Vedas, IMHO, were written over a very long time.

    Then which part of Zoroastrian scripture is being compared, Yasna, Gatha, Avesta, Vendidad, Visperad, Yasht, Khordeh Avesta, Ab-Zohr, Ahuna Vairya or whatever? There cannot be a generalization. I do not see much pre-Zoroaster material.
