I was made into a fan after I watched a few episodes, but once David Tennant's face lit up my TV screen I was quickly converted into a full blown Whovian.

Totally agree; we, to me, are God's thoughts -- our existence is to experience this Divine Comedy through a myriad of roles; a way for God to know Itself.

I have to echo what Odion says below. Except the idiot part. He's far from that. I am not good at prayer and worship either. Last night was the first time in at least a week or two that I lit lamps on my altar and made an offering of light (waving the light to the deities), and even then I didn't do prayers, just a couple of mantras. But I felt OK with that. I haven't sat for japa in the longest time, though I say the mantras often. I don't believe you have to be "stuck" with only one mantra. I listen to bhajans in my iPod, do you think I don't chant along with Om namah Shivaya, or the Kali or Narasimha gayatris? I really am not one for rules and rituals. There is something called antharyagama puja, "internal worship". Thinking of your god(s) and/or goddess(es) and making mental offerings is something Krishna endorsed, and imo is just as, if not more, appreciated by the deities than all the grand pujas and grand temples.

Focusing on the local spirits sounds very similar to Voodoo/Vodun/Vodou; they traditionally see the supreme Divinity as near-unknowable.

When it comes to not knowing how to approach, or not approaching, the highest divinities, this is perfectly normal from a human perspective: the supreme gods usually become more remote, and eventually we end up seeing them as "deus otiosus" -- "idle gods", or "useless gods", as we often perceive them as unable to intervene (or uninterested in) our lives.

A bit of mysticism, though, can help break that barrier; I think that's why people usually say "it's like a relationship" with their God/s.

If you were raised without religion, or haven't been religious for a while, it's often hard to get into worship. I struggle with it now; prayer and worship is hard for me too.
