Most creatures are very simple, brainless affairs. The vast majority in fact are bacteria, microbes,viruses and plants. As far as we know, they don't even have a 'mentality'.
As for other more complex creatures, such as animals and insects, there is no evidence that they are aware of their mortality. Their 'survival-oriented' behaviors are the result of natural selection, not an intention.
If there was a 'being' of the metaphysical kind, it would not 'want to survive' either - why would it, if it were metaphysical, and thus not subject to a final death ?
If humans were indeed 'souls', they would be utterly fearless. They are fearful because they know they are going to die. We have no reason to believe that other creatures know that.
They may, but we have no reason to believe they do.
Then again, I am most likely totally wrong about everything.
