In general, Nichiren Buddhists maintain a home altar. There are prescribed daily practices, in addition to attending services at a temple or sangha when one can do so. So the majority of one's practice takes place at home by defauklt anyway.
If there is no temple near where you live, then there are some ways to address the problem. My temple (Myoken Temple in Houston, Texas) and a couple of others webcast services regularly. Several of our ministers are willing to work long-distance with students via email, phone, Skype, Tokbox and so forth. Links for webcasts, calendars and contact information for ministers will be on each temple's website.
We try to hold at least one nationwide week-long retreat each year. Some of our temples also sponsor weekend retreats, or day-long mini-retreats; these offer an opportunity for people to get a wide variety of temple experiences compressed into a short duration, making a relatively long trip as worthwhile as possible.
