    The goal is not to hurt the child but a stern NO and a swat on the butt tells them it is bad and not to do it again or be punished. Just the act of doing it is enough for them to understand. IMO.

    This is how I look at it... As an athiest I believe it is fine. But for those of you that believe in a god, why would it not want you to enjoy all things enjoyable? If God made it than it must be ok right? Otherwise procreation would not be as enjoyable.

    Well I don't believe that it is wrong. I also don't believe that the government should be able to tell parents how to raise their children. (Except in child abuse instances) I was spanked and turned out just fine.

    More like a coping mechanisim. When something bad happens they can simply say that it was god's will. Without that people may actually have to figure out why things happen and try and stop them.

    Have you ever had to explain to a small child why something is wrong? They don't comprehend. A little swatt says to them that it was bad and not to do it.

    It doesn't have to hurt for a small child to know that they are in trouble. Once a child gets to a certain mental age spanking is no longer required. They can comprehend why it is wrong.

    Spanking is not always effective. My niece didn't respond to spankings so alternative disciplin had to be used.

    No they are not the same and IMO people need to realise that when my mother spanked my brother for setting fire to the kitchen it was not abuse. But when my friend was hit and sent flying, THAT was abuse. And unless we are abusing our kids then the state and everyone else should stay out of it.
