Make that 11!!! LoL!!!

I realize topics are cyclic around here... but wow!!!!!!

How much does 'Hell' play into your religious and/or spiritual life?

Not to create one more thread.... rather I just felt the need to draw attention to how many of them there were, especially in one forum.

Is it people not jumping in on other conversations or are the questions really that strikingly different?

The concept of Hell is both fascinating and horrifying. That makes it a popular subject for debate. Throw in the fact that Hell can be used as a weapon to either discredit Christianity/Islam or as a threat to non-believers and you have a concept that can easily be used to rile people.

Thanks for the replies and the LoLz so far folks.

I was raised with Hell, in the United Methodist church I was raised in.
I suppose I haven't given it much thought literally and literally for a long time, and am not sure when the cross over into allegory became my understanding of what 'hell' could be likened to or how we could experience 'hells' in our lives here and now.

Hell may be the idea that has caused the greatest total amount of damage to the collective human psyche. It has to be opposed by every sober-minded person, and often, so that we can liberate the human species from the most evil idea imaginable - eternal torture.

For those obsessed with the idea it seems to me to be all about-FEAR.
To me it is there to let those who are considering & makeing choices that it is all about ACCOUNTABILITY!
Unwise ways begets a world that is unwise.
While fear is a feeling it captures a concept that life can give you stress that you may not be able to cope with.
Seeking a path of positive thoughts & feelings is best carried in a uhnderstanding how to manage life's challenges. it addresses concerns & lays them to rest letting peace reside.
To desire a world full of firey desires that are all consumeing is not likely to let you see a world of light that is tranquil.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Well, come to think of it, the Tiny Tortures Division is pretty entertaining too - as long as I'm watching someone else be subjected to people smacking gum as they sit next to you in a waiting room, a stranger throwing up in an elevator which is moving very slowly, or being stuck behind someone in the right lane, riding along right beside the car in the left lane at exactly the same speed, as their right turn signal flashes merrily for the next six miles.

For me personally on a day-to-day level, not much at all. In my beliefs hell is a consequence for rejecting to confess Jesus Christ as Lord.

There really is little biblical support for hell, or a place of everlasting punishment. Any god that would torture someone for eternity is not benevolent.

"The greatest trick christians ever pulled was convincing the world that Satan exists."

That's how the saying goes right? Anyways, Hell is an interesting concept if only in the fact that it makes Christianity work. Without a Hell why do all these things you're telling us to do? Without Satan why is there suffering in the world? Obviously Hell and Satan are cop out answers to these questions, but they make an easy answer to those who don't feel the need to search deeper.

These hell threads have not been very productive unless you enjoy two mindsets crashing into each other. Some folks love a good train wreck.

You have a point there Rick.... I guess I was just wondering why the gladiators aren't just all in one arena trying to hack it out....?

Much as with other versions of Hell where the difference between it and Heaven only depends on a person's approach, that "Hell" is only Hell for someone who doesn't know the PIT maneuver. :D

Sure you all know this one:

A man spoke with the Lord about Heaven and Hell.
"I will show you Hell," said the Lord.

And they went into a room which had a large pot of stew in the middle.

The smell was delicious and around the pot sat people who were famished and desperate. All were holding spoons with very long handles which reached to the pot, but because the handles of the spoons were longer than their arms, it was impossible to get the stew into their mouths. Their suffering was terrible.

"Now I will show you Heaven," said the Lord.

And they went into an identical room. There was a similar pot of stew and the people had the same identical spoons, but they were well nourished, talking and happy.

At first the man did not understand.
"It is simple," said the Lord.

"You see, they have learned to feed each other."
