I assent with this. The sort of people who believe in end-of-the-world prophecies, and even worse that we can calculate them, are usually driven by something else than reason and rationality. Not to say that it is ever rational to believe in end-time prophecy, but sometimes we try the path of reason, and just end up honestly lost by the wayside. The people who believe in the Camping Rapture are the ones who want to believe it is coming. It is generally, I suspect, an emotional belief.

I have to disagree.

Even though I disagree with Camping and his antics, I do not believe his offenses against decency, honor, and dignity are serious enough to shoot him for it.


Though I would find it justified to put Camping in a room with those who believed him....

Yes, but it is also their fault for believing him. It is not like he hides where he is getting his mystical knowledge from. In his pamphlet, he tells you exactly how he calculates the dates so you can see for yourself. If you are stupid enough to believe him....

My prediction: when the world doesn't come to an end, it will not shake the confidence of the believers very much. They will either (1) claim the Rapture DID happen, but almost everyone has been left behind, or (2) find a mistake in their math and push their prediction back to some later date. They will do this without a trace of self-doubt.

Bernie Madoff outright lied to people. Unless it can be proven that Harold Camping does not believe what he preaches and that he only did it for profit, you have no case. Otherwise we would have to begin to start policing ideas, beliefs and thoughts. If that is the case, we might have to arrest church preachers and elders who collect donations from their congregation, since there is no evidence of God's existence and would be viewed as deception.
