We can clean up after the fact, voice our sorrow or raise our fist, but are there any real solutions to prevent this?

I'm not sure. People say it's often a mental health issue. Perhaps the system of schooling we have is not conducive to the best mental health among students.

The USA has a broken healthcare system, and this has been especially bad for mental health. Insurance companies have cut benefit as costs go up. The result is many people can't afford care they need, and those with mental health issues end up in jails. Plus there is a lot of shame related to getting mental health therapy, so those who might need it will avoid it due to stigmas.

I think there is some truth to that, but adolescents seems to be an area of mental health issues just as it is. Yet some cultures do not seem to experience the effects of severe responses.

Of course, it is not just in schools, but any place vulnerable to an individual with a weapon. It doesn't even have to be a gun.

Another school shooting that will result in Republicans doing nothing. Look for the NRA to try to cash in on this because "liberals be coming for your guns".
I know a lot of 'liberals' that own guns.

On the response, I think you are correct. This is one instance of a continuing series and still things are as they have been.

I think that there are parts of this country that have taken gun ownership to a different level than defense or sport. It is as an office of a religion for many.

Start a campaign "no vote for an NRA rating better than D". The NRA is so friendly to give advice who to vote for if you like people being shot.
Most people in the US are for better gun control. You just have to get them to vote that way. Good luck.
I may be wrong, but I think we can have the right and manage it better than we are. But there is a growing subculture that views guns as almost holy articles that are sacrosanct. I remember meeting a park ranger once who started showing me pictures of his guns like he was showing someone pictures of his children. He had wallet shots. It is that mindset that is difficult to reason with.

That has been done. Yet here we are. Perhaps finding other solutions that do not require shooting anyone. Since the genie is out of the lamp and guns are not going away, it may be that we will have to live with managing it rather than eliminating it completely.
And yet many other countries basically have eliminated it. We as Americans should expect first world living conditions, not accept as a fact of life violence that is more on par with third world countries.

Don't. You don't have to. The gun nuts are still in the minority. Just get the sensible ones to care enough to vote.

When I see stuff like this I think perhaps something is just wrong with US culture, but I am likely biased to think that because I do not think the nation has had a single morally good day.

No one person or population can achieve perfection, whatever that may be, but I know we can do better than we are.

I think it is a cultural issues as noted by the responses of several on here. More regulations, preparedness and simply ignoring the extremists may be a means for cultural change. But those changes take time.

"Better" rather than "more" is my regulatory focus.
But it would mean some new ones regarding
storage & training.

My heart goes out to the families.

I doubt most anybody legitimately needs to have a firearm loaded with more than six bullets. I'd like the private ownership of large capacity magazines, specifically those that could be loaded with more than 6 rounds of ammo, be effectively banned by there being a hefty tax and national registry imposed on the private owners of large capacity magazines. I'm confident this common sense gun control measure will result in fewer mass shootings.

What about having weapons stored in a private armory where you can check them out?
They do that in the military.

It's not a bad idea in principle, but it's definitely a radical move. A lot like keeping guns for emergencies as much as for casual sport.
