7 Lifetimes or Forever?

One of the insights I've had in sadhana, and approach to this that has come up from studying these patterns in my family and friends is just how attached to gender I am. For example, I have some kind of soul relationship with a deceased uncle of mine. He is reborn either as my elder brother, or as myself. That part's pretty clear, but I just assume we (my brother and I) were both male in our last life. Could well have been one male and one female.

I've noticed that people, when conjecturing about who they were, etc. generally don't dispose of the gender identity across the previous lives. My one daughter was my FIL, so that helped extinguish that falsity somewhat. And so it goes.

It seems likely to me that close friends could easily become siblings, or vice versa. I also sense that the patterns are becoming far more globalized now, while previously they were quite village-centered.

If the tenancy is to reincarnate within families, what might cause someone to reincarnate across the globe, or even the next state over in a previously unrelated family, do you think?

In my own case, it was a friendship, and one friend followed the other over here. So there could be lots of reasons. We also have much more of a global village these days. My little temple community here is just an extension of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. So it's like Kopay or Alaveddy, just another village on the Jaffna Peninsula. That's how it would be seen from the astral plane.

I've also heard of the 'grass is greener on the other side of the fence' syndrome applied to reincarnation. Some people think that is the main reason we have so many eastern souls in western bodies, and western souls in eastern bodies these days.

There is also the that the cloudier you are at the point of death, the less clear are the travel plans, so to speak.

Maybe wanting to recapture something of a past life, to re-experience it or to finish something. Several of the people at temple said that I am drawn to Hinduism because I was Hindu in a past life. Either something was left unfinished, or not learned, or we're looking to recapture some pleasantness about the past life. I don't think we totally forget everything about the past. Some subconscious remnants remain to draw us to certain things, people and places. It's more than "ooh, I like that painting, I'll buy it". It's almost a compelling feeling.
