I was once quite curious about McMansions. Especially curious about why they are everywhere in the country so similar! Then I learned it's because it is more profitable to build them than perhaps any other style. D'uh, Sunstone!

Yeah they basically took the assembly line and applied it to houses. I swear it's horrible...you go into some neighborhoods and every single house looks the same.

Excited to report that husband and I have found another couple who are seriously considering investing in one of these, and that we could have our own tiny houses with a communal kitchen in the center of all the houses. We'd all ideally like two or three more couples/smaller families to start our commune.

I remember when hubbie and I first saw houses like these, it just spoke to our hearts. We fell madly in love with the smaller spaces and minimizing our abode to utter simplicity. But we didn't want to find ourselves alone in the lifestyle. Now we're beginning to plan, and it's likely within the next 5-7 years that we'll be able to begin building.

LOVE!!

The problem is frequently compounded by the neighborhood covenants that homeowners are required to sign before buying a house. Those covenants sometimes specify, say, that you can paint your house only one of five shades. Sometimes, that's three shades of beige, a blue, and a grey -- and that's all you get to choose from.

The covenants are designed to insure that no one does anything which would cause their neighbor's homes to decline in market value. But they also certainly have the effect of producing neighborhoods that are too homogenous for some people's taste.

I should perhaps add that it's no accident the homes are more profitable to build than, say, one-off smaller homes. Not only are there economies of scale in knocking off 200 houses that are essentially variations on a single design, but also, in some locations, the developers successfully lobby to change the building codes so that their houses are even more profitable to build than they would otherwise be. That can also have the effect of making unique designs difficult to build to code.
