A beggar of I-75

This is a piece (see address below) that I wrote a few years ago and was published in Christian Review. It is always painful to see so much pain and suffering in the world. Yet, we are all called to do what we can, even if it is with only one person at a time.
I used to drive more than I do now so I had to figure out what I could do. This is one experience with this issue.

Many people do much good when they come upon individuals who are suffering, yet it is just a drop in the bucket. Yet as Christians we must never forget that those we meet show us the face of Jesus Christ. When that is forgotten, we can lose sight of the dignity of all those we meet.--Br.MD

I prefer my daughter's way when confronted by those in need, whether on the roadside or in parking lots. There is one fellow always looking for help outside the grocery store. The first time she 'encountered' him she came back with a grinder, chips and a coke. This is her way, be it at a store or a McDonalds and the like, she will stop with a meal. Holding up traffic if she had to leave her car to reach him, she would do it even having a short conversation with him/her. I would love to say it was the way she was raised, and partially it was, but she has an almost hatred for religion, church, yet a deep faith. I've always stopped long enough to give what cash I had at the time, but never really 'encountered' the person as she has does.

One of our granddaughters goes to the University of Detroit Mercy, and she often has given at least part of her lunch to some who are in need.

BTW, Catholic Charities is a great and efficient charity, and my wife & I donate to the S.E. Michigan region of it that covers Detroit and Flint and other nearby communities. Fortunately, we haven't seen the long lines like in many other U.S. cities, but there's still a great need here.
