Some kids are ready for that “material” (for lack of a better word) at a younger age than others. This is why we have age recommendations on books and why that’s not always explicitly followed.
My cousin grew up around teachers and honestly the classics she was reading make this book look like Green Eggs and Ham lol

I don’t understand why the kid was urged to read this book to his class though. Like what was the point of that?
US style publicity stunts involving school boards seems to be a thing and it’s one that I still don’t understand. Sorry

No commentary. Just letting the vid stand on its own as it plays out.

The debate will obviously manifest itself after viewing the school board video.
I'm vehemently against the book bans that are going on in many US school districts now but this is an example of a failure of the librarian. The book was marked as "not appropriate for pupils under 14" and thus the boy should have not been able to rent it.
(He should have done it the old style by finding the secret stash of his parents as I did at his age and keep his mouth shut.)

I wrote some pretty hardcore smut when I was 12.

I didn't read it to my class.

There's no need for this to be in a school.

There is no need for this book to be in any school, even high school. If a student wants to read this or a parent wants their child to read this material they can purchase it themselves or go to a public library. What is the purpose of the school district having this book? I took my child out of the public school system because they are not educating our children anymore in public school. People are using the children to promote social issues.

Just remember they got this from people who insist evolution is entirely false and that their god just poofed everything into existence a few thousand years ago, amd it's largely and mostly the same people doing this who have been fighting against evolution.
And stupid publicity stunts are their only option and sanity, reason and logic are not with them and thus they can't ever win doing things like a proper person.

I can see it.

Schools actually are more activist institutions now than learning institutions to a larger extent.

I draw the line at people teaching sex ed to kindergarten classes where students can barely yet draw straight lines and are learning how to use scissors to cut colored construction paper straight for their projects, much less tie their own shoelaces.

Stick to the three R's and let the kids be kids for awhile.

My school had age restriction things and parental permission forms. No reason for it to not be there.
And reading it to his class? That is most highly unusual here and doesn't really happen or occur.

Let me translate what this says:
I've deliberately ignored and refused to accept for many years the cirriculum is age appropriate and just because the word sex is there doesn't automatically learn the kids learn about sexual intercourse.
I've also not studied US education and it's history and I don't realize the "three Rs" fell out of favor a long time ago because it's short sighted and limited, a emphasis on producing democratic citizens over academics became a focus many decades ago.

No. That's your erroneous translation.

Keep your words in your own paragraphs.

Keep it out of mine.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Or at least a popcorn worthy display

You know, if schools (let’s say high school age) were to ban any and all books that contain “smutty material” they’d have to get rid of the Western Literary canon.
Might make teaching English a tad hard to do.
There’s nothing bawdier than the classics, as they say ‍
Just saying. Not every book that can be construed as “smut” is without academic merit.

We've been over this so many times that a willfull reluctance to accept what sex ed actually is can be the only explanation.
And I know I've discussed this aspect of US Education history. Again, it's a willful refusal to accept the facts of what is. School has started to realize social studies are also necessary for about a century now because those "three Rs" don't prepare people to be members of a democratic society. Being a good party host and dating in high school where school topics before you were born.

First, 11-year-olds are looking at far worse than this online every single day, unimpeded. And yet not one of these outraged parents or politicians are "shocked" by the reality of this. Nor do ANY of them intend to do anything about it.

Secondly, perhaps if these parents and politicians would allocate a little bit of money to properly fund their school's library such books could have been designated off limits to the younger students and lent out by permission for the older ones.

Lastly, anyone with a thinking brain should have seen immediately that this is a deliberate underhanded 'stunt' to try and drum up outrage instead of seeking a solution. If they were so concerned about this 11-year-old reading this material, why are they MAKING him read it out loud, in public?
