I do not understand the basis for suggesting that Paul was "perhaps indicating the wealth of the educated."

Also, I would probably prefer something like
Paul may be being overly melodramatic
to
Paul may be being a bit melodramatic (or more precisely, a drama queen).

Oh, that's from someone else who wrote a book on the educated elite in Corinth (I'm not quoting him here or anything like that). There's no footnote because I've discussed that in detail in previous chapters. It's not really an argument or an observation, but a simple reminder of what I've already talked about at length in the dissertation. I might add a footnote if my prof thinks that it's distracting to the reader.

And yes, I will remove the drama queen thing. :p

I called Paul a weirdo one time and I never heard the end of it.

I know that we're all thinking it, but most have social skills which suppress offensive questions.
Luckily, I'm here.
Why on Earth are you devoting a significant portion of your life studying this arcane (what I really mean is "insignificant") stuff?

Unbridled curiosity. I was reading more than 150 books a year in my undergrad work, and I developed a kind of obligation to give back to a community that greatly enriched my life. I had no idea that by the time I got this far, I'd be doing something quite like this and even harder work is ahead. I don't just want a Ph.D. now, I want to be a university professor, and the price is quite high for that as far is time in study, research, writing books, etc.

And I do happen to think that my dissertation subject is indeed the most fascinating subject in the field. :D

You get to be my consultant when I start writing paranormal thrillers involving religious characters.

Yes...& I'd add that "drama queen" sounds very unscholarly.
It does, that's why I feel both would be appropriate, though I couldn't say for certain without knowing who was grading this ****. Maybe "theatrical" or "histrionic" would be better. I think they capture the exaggerated melodramatic aspect of "drama queen," but I'm not 100 percent sure.

Ha! I just looked at my final draft of that paragraph and aside from spelling changes, it's exactly the same.

I did remove "drama queen" and went with Jay's "overly melodramatic."

I prefer elegant understatement, but Jay can have the pride of knowing that he has one word in the dissertation. :foryou:
