A new law from Mike Godwin (yes, that Godwin)

An aside, I hate the term "woke". Shouldn't it be "awakened"? Just sounds dumb to my ears. Also, nobody is ever fully "awake" as far of society goes. Nobody is fully free of ignorance and blind slots. Also, those who loudly declare themselves to be "woke" often tend to be sanctonious hypocrites.

Yeah, I suppose that makes sense. But there's all kinds of terms which get floated about to describe basically the same thing. It seems to vary by generation though.

Back in the day, "bleeding heart liberal" was what "woke" was. When conservatives said it, they said it scornfully, but a lot of liberals took it on as a badge of honor.
Dude, you are woke. You might be more woke than I am. But neither of us are as woke as my girlfriend, she's really woke.

And here I thought "woke" meant awareness of disadvantages and being a dick about it.

I think this is exactly why I don't like that word.
Even though I know it's not necessarily used in a pejorative way, I tend to associate it with the radical bunch among them; the ones who express contempt and verbal aggression towards anyone who is not as "compassionate" as they themselves are.
I believe it's this mentality that can ironically warp good intentions the into the narrow-mindedness, oppression, and hypocrisy they are trying to fight.

Also, those who loudly declare themselves to be "woke" often tend to be sanctonious hypocrites.

Isn't that kind of the point of using "woke" pejoratively? There are indeed a class of insufferable, virtue signalling hypocrites who deserve criticism.

The problem is people with different ideologies often see the world through "different glasses" where they look at the same set of facts and see something completely different.

Among other failings, a sizeable minority of "the left" will always be sanctimonious, bien pensant hypocrites and a sizeable minority of "the right" will be bigots.

So when people mock the "woke" they think they are targeting sanctimonious bien pensant hypocrites, not simply opposing any form of social justice. Of course, depending on how strong the the ideological distortion is on their "glasses", some people do limit their criticism to a narrow 'elite' while the worst cases end up seeing "wokeness" as everything proposed by the "left".

In turn, depending on the how strong the the ideological distortion present in the glasses worn by those on "the left", some can see that many people do simply mock the band of sanctimonious, bien pensant hypocrites as they believe they harm society, while others think 99% of those who mock the "woke" only do so because they are awful racists driven by hate and prejudice.

And then you get the vice-versa about "the right" being fascists and nazis...

Such are the joys of partisanship and a vicious cycle of discourse that gets increasing detached from reality.

Well, you thought wrong.
Reading through the other comments, I think I wasn't that far off. As words are defined through their usage, the pejorative meaning will become common use, and then the word will fade into oblivion, like "hip" did for the hippies.

Well, yes the rightwing want it to be a pejorative. If being concerned with disadvantage is made bad, then being reactionary can remain good. Likewise brexiters wittily turned remainer into remoaner and now we are free to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

And "punk" is no longer a pejorative. It works in both ways.

Yeah, I can imagine how them conservatives are going to be all upset at being called ****heads.
Not.
And liberals really hate being called a ****. Those 2
sides have succumbed to Trump's style of expression.

It seems that Godwin has joined the ranks of piqued
partisans who merely curse the other side, & wallow
in feelings of insight & cleverness.

I’ve only ever heard the term used in the context of the “war on woke”, a tool used by the political right to divide working class people against each other. An effective tool, I should say.

Libertarians hate being called ********, ****, and ***********************************.

At least commies have a thick skin. You can call us anything and we don't mind.
