That's exactly what we see out in the world. Religions and cultures evolve over time, with their success and propagation dependent on environmental factors. Their environment is made up of the current moral sensibilities, traditions, and cultural trajectories of human groups.
Any Christian from 500 years ago wouldn't recognize any "true" Christians today. I fully expect that 500 years in the future, if any Christians still persist, they will look back on its theology today and shake their heads at our ignorant interpretations and bad exegesis. The Catholic church is becoming much more accepting of homosexuality in recent years. The Muslim theocracies are being rocked by unrest due to the people no longer wanting to live under an iron age moral system. Religions that can't change to stay relevant or appealing will wane and disappear.
This is why religion has nothing on science. Science produces the same results, no matter what culture or geographic region people are in. Religion is clearly a facet of culture and the self-identities we form as we enter adulthood, which is entirely subjective and unrelated to objective truths about reality.
