a question for atheists and theists

they don't have to be...

Oh, well in that case, I guess it would defend on what family and what kinda technological breakthrough we are talking about here. I don't really care too much about the IPhone 8S, but if it somehow doubles food production, I'd pick the breakthrough.

to atheists- what is more valuable to you as a prson, a ground breaking discovery of science or sharing a smile with a loved one?

:)
I'll go with the second! I get a little uncomfortable with scientific triumphalism that may supposed rationalists think they possess. And the way the internet has created an atheist humanist pseudo-religion, often with principles and ethics that are given a priori, as statements of faith and never explained clearly how they derive from science or our understanding of human evolutionary history.

I have a family (including a large number of grandkids) that I love and appreciate more than I could ever adequately express. That said, I choose the "ground breaking discovery of science" that serves humanity.

(I would be curious to know what percentage of theists believe in revelation.)
I suppose it would depend on how you defined revelation.

I certainly don't believe that particular people have direct lines to the divine and get regular updates. I do think that people get moments of clarity (divine or otherwise) that can help humanity advance in significant ways.
I also think the majority of these things are singular events... and that they can be milked by the unscrupulous.

so here is the question...
to theists- what is more valuable to you as a person, a revelation of some sort from god or sharing a smile with a loved one?
