We've been there before and will be heading there again in a few months en route to Israel. Any suggestions?

Stay away from the main tourist locations, particularly bad are Tower of London and Madame Tussauds.

If you like nice restaurants/pubs always go on or two blocks back from the main road.

- Greenwich Naval Museum, Cutty Sark and Royal Observatory. Can go by Docklands Light Rly and walk through pedestrian tunnel under Thames.
- Sir John Soane Museum (offbeat but fascinating collection and house)
- Hampton Court, a bit out of town, can do by train from Waterloo stn.Day trip.
- Kew Gardens, ditto either Waterloo to Kew Bridge and walk or Kew Gardens Underground (can combine with Brentford Water & Steam Museum: go on a day when it is "in steam", i.e. engines are working)
- South Kensington Museums: Natural History and Victoria & Albert very good, Science Museum a bit dumbed down for kiddies these days, sadly.

If you've seen these I may be able to think up some more.

P.S. Wholeheartedly endorse Vee's suggestion of British Museum. Loads to see. I always love the clocks.

I was born there and spent 19 years there, before moving away. Haven't been back for decades so wouldn't know what has changed, but many of the museums and art galleries must be worth a visit. It's worth waiting about to hear Big Ben chime ...........

A friend of mine recently returned from vacation in the UK. He suggested staying away from London (super crowded) and touring the countryside. Said it is quite beautiful and the people were friendly.

True. Also Oxford, Cambridge and Bath are worth considering as day trips out from London.

Lots of free museums.

Well, I went like over a decade ago. I was actually back-packing on my own. Took the train to London from Amsterdam with no plans. Found a cheap motel the night I came in and made the best of it.

Funniest thing. I actually met someone I knew at one of the museums. Small world...

Use this in google: "list of museums around London." They have some interesting looking ones.

There are also food factory tours such as the Cadbury confectioner tour, winemaking tour etc.

I think you can inquire about touring other factories like the Jaguar factory, but you will have to ask for a booking and not just show up.

How about the Tank Museum? http://www.tankmuseum.org/visit-us
